I'm shopping for a DVD/blue ray combo

I haven't bought a DVD or blue ray player in years. Ian shopping on amazon and I am blown away by the amount of options available. What are your suggestions for reliability and something sleek? I don't think there's a need to spend a pretty penny on a movie player.
TIA fellas

Wouldn't a blu-ray player, play DVDs?

This Sony player just came out and it is getting rave reviews from the audio world. It will play every type of disc and file type and also convert (has a DAC)...
Why would someone spend $350 on a Blu-ray player that can't play 4K BDs?

It plays high res audio. I agree it should play 4K disc.

Well, $350 is not a lot of money...

Or get an Oppo for $500...

$350 is a lot of money for a Blu-Ray player, considering that on the very low end you can get a player for 1/5 of that price. We get it, you're an OT baller who only buys super high end audiophile stuff. But for normal people, if you're going to spend that much, you damn well should be getting a player that supports 4K.

Dude--I linked him to Crutchfield...frigging CRUTCHFIELD!
$350 is not a lot of money for a player--it's in the Crutchfield catalog, so it ain't high end stuff.

I wouldn't touch a Sony player at any price without first verifying that they fixed the bug that causes audio dropouts on Blurays that use Dolby Atmos and seamless branching (problem in 2015 models), and that the transport isn't a loud POS (problem in 2014 models). Then there's their stupid treatment of subtitles, which you can only cycle through, a real PITA when there are 15 languages on the disc and you want to turn them off.

CAD automated his entire house for less.
For the people who think this is expensive you should look at the pricing for Sony's other hi res players.

I'm not exactly in the market for a blue ray player that expensive. I was looking for something reliable between 50-75 bucks

If you don't need wifi just buy a BDP-S1700

Thank you...you understand.
I looked at some of the cheapest 4K players I could find last night and they were from Samsung... LINK and they were $400--and they had some issues...no rewind/FF and NO HDR!! (Why do 4K if you don't have HDR?)...among some of its faults.
For an entry HDR 4K, you are looking at at least $650--and that is one of the cheapest I could find--a decent one will run a few hundred more!
The OP asked for a BD DVD player, and I suggested a new model that just got a rave review from Stereophile (they normally don't do pieces in this low price range--so it must be good for them to touch it).
For all this machine does, it's physical build and weight, it's processors and DAC...it is a bargain at $350---yet it was criticized for not having 4K playback at that price point, then I am called a baller for suggesting such an over the top piece of gear ($350)!!
Wow.
Had the OP stated he wanted to be in the $70 range, I would not have responded at all--the cheapest BD player on Target's website is around $70.
Did anyone else suggest a 4K player to compete with the one I suggested? Please find me one that will do 4K HDR and all the features and build of the one I presented, and then a link to the price...
I'll wait...

Sure. How about this one:

This Samsung UBD-K8500 you linked to does support HDR, and it says so in your link. At $399 it is in the same price range as the $350 Sony.

You are seriously out of touch with the average consumer.

Just wanted to let you know how right you are.

You are correct...I read it as the player, not the TV....my bad there.

Haha, no, I didn't see that thread, but I assumed that's the type of person he is from this thread.
And if he's into high-end AV stuff that's totally cool with me--if it makes him happy and he has the money for it, all the more power to him.
The average person though just wants to go to Best Buy and buy one of the cheaper things they have on the shelf, and they will hardly notice any difference.
