I feel certain this is a dumb question, but I really can't figure it out......

About to upgrade phones tomorrow, and wanted to be sure I don't lose any photos. I posted all photos and videos in my icloud photo sharing. I shared one album with my email address and another with my husbands cell phone. We can't find them any where. It shows that they were "posted" or "shared" but where? We did not receive an email or text message indicating anything.

If your photos are backed up to the cloud, you should be able to log into icloud.com click on the photos button and confirm all your photos and videos are backed up.

Just install Google photos on your iPhone and you'll be a billion times happier with the cloud features

Why does it ask who to share it with (makes me enter email address or cell phone number)?

Let me tell you the main feature that I like about Photos, and you can tell me if Google can meet or exceed it:

Photos backs up the complete version of the image to iCloud while keeping older photos on your devices in a thumbnail size to save space.

That feature alone has kept me from buying a new computer or dumping most of my photos onto an external HDD. I will say that I felt that iPhotos was easier to keep organized, but some of that has been due to the way my pictures are now shared automatically between devices. I used to dump photos from my phone and organize them, but they are now instantly sent to my computer over iCloud. This seems to now cause a lot of pictures to get lost in the fray over time, and can make it harder to find things that aren't put into albums.

Google photos backs up every photo and video (which it puts on a private YouTube account) for free.

All of them.

As many as you take.

To share you can either get a publically shareable web link or share it privately.

It couldn't be any easier.

You can then factory reset your phone and as soon as you log back into your Google account.. Every photo and video is right there like you never lost it.

It doesn't try to cram anything back on your phone. Why would it?

What about with your computer? Do you have to log in to their page to get to the images? The one thing I've liked about Photos is that it is seemless. Even if I scroll back to an older photo or video it just takes a few moments for it to download the hi res version without ever having to log in or acess through your browser. It's all handled automatically within the app. The same thing takes place on your phone. I have instant access to nearly 12,000 photos, and that only takes up ~4 GB of space of my phone.

you have to be logged into google/gmail but who isn't?

i just open any random browser on my computer and can get right to the images & video.

are you saying you have to have an app on your computer to do this? dont you have to log into the app the same way as logging into google on a browser?

whats more, i can get to them at any time anywhere in the whole world on virtually any computer in existence.

with an apple app you're very limited to when/how you can actually view the photos and you certainly can't get to them on a friend's computer unless you log them out of the app first.

plus - youtube.

you can't argue there is a better way to share video with friends/family than google automatically syncing your phone's videos *IN HD* to youtube so all you need to do is make like 2 clicks & 'copy' to get a shareable youtube url for anyone you want.

i have instant access to 20,000+ photos and 1080p videos and it takes up ZERO space on my phone (except what i'm currently viewing that is cached for the moment).

Yes, the Photos app on my phone, tablet, and computer is all linked through iCloud. I simply open the app and the photos are all there in the same organized fashion.

False, I can log into iCloud from any browser just like you log into Google and access them on a friend's computer.

Perhaps, but I can send a direct link using the app to the video in iCloud. I haven't done this with a video, so I can't comment on how they open it. If I want to link it to YouTube, I just click a button in the app to upload it to my YouTube account.

Can you edit photos in Google Photos, or do you have to download them to third party software? Once you download them, do you have to reupload them? For moderate photo editing, I can do this all within Photos on my computer or even phone.

It sounds like there are a lot of comparable features. The biggest knock is that I'm paying about $3 a month of 200 GB of space.

you can do limited editing in firefox and IE but in chrome you can do virtually anything you could with the old picasa app.

yep, you do have to click '4k pixel' option for google photos to be unlimited. any higher resolution than that and it starts to eat into your 15GB free storage.

to go up to 100GB its like $2/mo i think but those prices are continuing to drop.
