I have a work issued HP elitebook with 1 HDMI output and project it to a 27 inch curved Samsung with 1 HDMI input. I ordered the same 27 inch screen to have a dual setup where you can scroll between the two.

I also have this from Best Buy for extra USB

I hooked the new monitor into the HDMI slot in this connector thing and nothing. The laptop wont recognize the second monitor.

I cant get a straight answer on google. Can someone explain to me what i need to have this work?

i find a HDMI 1 to 2 adaptor on amazon but they said it just mirrors your 2 screens.

It's a USB 3.0 dock. Chances are it requires a driver and/or additional software to work properly. I believe you probably also have to connect both monitors to the dock for it to work in an extended configuration, not one to the laptop and the other to the dock.

Get this instead. Can power two monitors for sure but not three monitors at the same time.

If you want a dual setup for your laptop (assuming your laptop doesn't have multiple video out ports) you need either a dock which has dual video out or the monitor itself needs to have the ability to be daisy-chained to another monitor (I know some newer Dell monitors have this ability but I haven't had the chance to tinker with it, no idea on HPs).

I have the same, work issued HP.

At the office we use dual displays connected to the HP dock linked by "broadhead". The dock is connected to the USB C port (right side of laptop)

At home I use a 27 inch external monitor connected directly to the laptop HDMI port and "extend" the desktop.

The j5 product you have needs a driver to work, if it will work at all and your IT dept may not allow the driver install, ymmv.

I've also considered how to run a two external monitor setup.
Not pulled the trigger on any equipment yet but this could work, $55.

Try switching which USB port you have the dock plugged into. Some USB ports can't deliver the proper amount of power for docks or certain high draw devices.

Do the monitors have DisplayPort ports? That's how you can daisy chain them to each other *if* you have a DisplayPort output on the laptop. There are too many Elitebook models for me to be able to tell if you've got one or not.

What are the available ouputs on the Elitebook you have? One HDMI, obviously. What else? USB-A 3.0 I assume, What about a USB-C or any other video outputs?

Drivers from J5

Also there is a spot for external power. It is possible there is a power issue from the USB port you are plugged into. If you have a USB-C port, I would always recommend that over a USB_A 3.0.

You probably cost more than $90 an hour after benefits to your company, at a minimum. $225 is immaterial considering how much your labor costs.

I have something close to that.

Goes USB-C into my laptop. I have two HDMIs running from it to my two monitors. Took me a moment to get my settings setup properly. But now no issues.

if windows, check device manager to see if you have all the proper drivers for the device. ! is bad in device manager, means hardware is not working properly.

Does the laptop have a display port? If so just get a display port to HDMI adapter. If not, I think a USB to HDMI adapter would allow windows to see the second monitor. If the monitor does not have two HDMI ports you will have to get someone from your I.T. department to install some drivers for most non HP docking stations to work. That is if your laptop has a USBC connection to connect to a docking station.

Buy a 10 year old used Mac - it works out of the box without a dongle. Just get two thunderbolt to HDMI cables.

A quick update.

As I mentioned in my previous post in this thread, I have a work issued HP Elitebook 830 G8.

I bit the bullet and got myself another 27" monitor (same size/brand) and a USB C hub.

This is the hub I went with ($50 plus tax):

The setup is plug and play with the hub (located behind the laptop) plugged into the USB C port on the laptop, two monitors to the hub via HDMI cables.

The laptop is the #2 display and I have it open to use the built in webcam.
To be clear, the displays are arranged 1, 2, 3 left to right and my mouse cursor moves across all 3 individual displays seamlessly.

Here is a pic of the setup:
