Does anyone have any experience with these types of semi-smart watches? Good, bad, or otherwise? TIA.

As someone who has bought at least three and returned them all, it depends on what you want..I wound up just keeping my phone in my pocket for a while and then eventually getting a Xiaomi(sp) for heart rate

Depending on what all you want, I got a Martian notifier off of amazon for $35. It sends all my notifications to my watch. For $35 you can try it and see if you like it before spending more on something else

I have the Fossil Q Crewmaster (page 2 of the review). Got it this past Christmas and love it. It's not an Apple watch, but does what I need it to do. Lots of settings and functions. Haven't had to change the battery yet.

The 'Q' has the chrono look that I'm going for. How does it alert you to a text message? Does it have a read out under the face or does it just vibrate? I don't care for the "futurist" looks of most smart watches/hybrids (i.e Apple Watch).

You can set the dial numbers to different people who text you most often. Say for example wife #1, daughter #2, best bud #3, GF #4 etc, and when they text, the watch vibrates and both hands of the watch go to that number. When you get a phone call, the watch vibrates and both hands go to 12. I have mine set to call at 12 and any text at 2. And it's all adjustable. You can even set one of the buttons on the side to take a pic with your phone if you want. The small dial on the face keeps track of your steps and you can set goals for it. The app is very easy to use and you can customize the settings to do pretty much as much or as little as you want. Like I said in my earlier post, this isn't an Apple watch but it does everything I want, which is pretty basic for me.
