I would just use it for books and netflix. Our Ipad 2 is basically a brick now and I just want a cheap replacement.

I have a 1st gen one I rarely use. That edition was awful for reading books because of screen glare. I think they've improved that though. Not sure.
I only use it for the occasional stream off Netflix of HBOGo.

I recently went looking for a new tablet. The latest one has pretty good reviews, but once you dig into them a lot of the same complaints are there. I had the first edition of the fire and it was a POS, of course. I was same as you, just want something reliable for reading and browsing when I travel.
I'm an Android phone guy but eventually made my way back to iPads for lack of solid Android tablets. Was going to get a mini 4, but grabbed an iPad air 2 for about 300 bucks. May be more than you want to spend, but I've just been through so many tablets that I didn't like, didn't want to waste more on trial and error.

For NetFlix it's fine, but the cheap ones have really low resolution screens, so if you're used to reading on an iPad it may not be as good as you'd like.

Sounds like I'm better off just buying books

I have one of the new generation fire tablets and it is terrible. It is sooooo slow it's painful. Google why is my fire so slow and see the millions of other people like me.
