I've had replayTV, comcast, then directtv, then dish, and now back to comcast over the last 15 years.

With xfinity/x1 i find other than sports, i don't bother to DVR anything.

the comcast 'on demand' section usually has the shows already if i'm being lazy and if they try to charge me for last month's episode of 'modern family' i finger-salute the TV and switch inputs to amazon fire and watch it on kodi.

the DVR is going the way of bluray disks.

eta if we can get voice control working with kodi then its game-over. thats the only thing that still kinda sucks. its quicker to find stuff on comcast using voice than firing up kodi and the on-screen keyboard..or going to find my hpone so i can key it in there.

Not it all. We ditched ours when we left ATT UVerse and with everything being on-demand, even my wife and kids don't miss it anymore.

Not really if you are using exodus with trakt.

Just add stuff to your collection on trakt. Have your settings in alphabetical order. After that no need to search.

Seriously, It is pretty easy if you have it set right. All I have to do is open Kodi, click favorites, click movies or shows, and everything is there in alphabetical order.

All you would need to do is get on trakt and add all the shows he likes to your collection before hand. Then you will have every episode.

Tips

When you find a movie or show put it your collection instead of watch list.

If you want them sorted in alphabetical order you have to do it with the settings on trakt's website. No way to sort it from kodi.

I use the aeon nox skin from kodi. It has a favorites tab. If you go to the movie collections tab, or tv collections tab in exodus you can long press and assign it to favorites. This will save you clicks later. When you click on favorites you will now see two tabs that say collections. If you long press those you can rename to movies and tv shows. After you have done that all you ever have to do is click favorites then pick between movies or tv. Once you pick one your entire collection pops up in alphabetical order.

When you start just add one movie and one tv series to see how it works. After you have added movies and series you may need to restart kodi for it to update and appear. Sometimes just clicking on exodus is enough to update it.

ive had to reinstall exodus 2 or 3x on my amazon fire tv and it seems to lose most of my settings when that happens. not sure what causes it but its frustrating.

That is another good thing about trakt. Your setting, movies, and shows are saved through them. If you have to reinstall exodus again you would only need to resync with your trakt acct.

OnDemand stinks when you can't fastforward. That's why I still rely on DVR...and not doing illegal things

A few great things about the Dish Hopper DVR:

1) It records 8 days worth of primetime on the regular networks. The mother-in-law asked if we watched Rudolph the other night. We didn't realize it was on, so we didn't schedule a recording. We were able to pull it up.

2) Autoskip commercials on most of those primetime shows. It used to do all 4 networks starting the next day, but CBS must have paid off Dish, because their commercials don't autoskip for a while.

3) Sports. School me on a way to watch good HD sports feeds where I can pause, rewind, or tape delay a game.

There are about half a dozen shows that I automatically record new episodes on Tivo. I prefer watching the recording because Tivo has a one-button commercial skip feature. I use PlayOn/PlayLater to record streaming video from Netflix and Amazon, mostly for things that I want to add to my permanent media collection. I can rent the movie and record it rather than buy it.

When I had cable it was very important. We hardly used the On Demand offerings because to find something to watch was buried 3, 4, sometimes 5 menus down; the UI was slow; and you couldn't fast forward through commercials. Now that we live the streaming life I don't think I could ever go back to cable even if cost was no object. Do streaming box UIs need major advancement? Yes. Is it easier to sit down in front of a TV and flip channels than go in and out of silo'd apps? Yes. Is watching whatever whenever with a 1080p (or 4k depending) menu that isn't a shitty linux skin coded by a college SE senior in 2005 for $300 worth the hassle? Yes.

This is one thing I really miss. Why can't I do this with live streams with any reliability in the MLB.tv or ESPN apps?

The people watching online are actually helping everyone else out. Do you think ps vue, sling, and dtv now would exist without all the pirating. The answer is no. You would still be stuck paying $150 a month with your proceeds going to 80 channels that you have never even watched.

The cable companies have enjoyed their monopolistic practices for far too long. I enjoy the fact that the door to other options has been opened and that there is no way for them to close it.
