I'm fairly certain ESPN is one of the channels that wouldn't come through HD by just plugging up the coax. Former coworker had me look into it for him because he still had internet from Cox (no tv filter was installed) and he was looking to get rid of direct. One of his hangups was not being able to get ESPN in HD from the Cox signal. Other channels like HGTV, FoxNews and Lifetime were actually in HD.

If I remember correctly the scan didn't place subsets on the channels either. I would try to confirm this but he passed away a few months ago so I can't say for sure. Also, he had spent about 20k on his tv, receiver, bluray, etc. so I doubt it was an issue with his tv being cheap.

You are correct. There is just a few people in this thread that keep tarding it up that have no idea what they are talking about.

YOU CANT GET ESPN IN HD WITHOUT SOME TYPE OF STREAM OR CABLE/SATELLITE BOX.

Just because someone agrees with you doesnt make it right. You can get HD ESPN without a box. A lot of newer TV's have the unscrambler/decoder tuner whatever thingy that lets the tv pickup premium HD channels (usually channels 100+) without a cable box. Its a built in cable box basically. You have to be subscribed to the channels but you definitely dont need a box.

Standard Def espn you can get with out a box. All hd channels not supplied Ota via antenna require some sort of decoding device either a cable card or a set top box from the cable provider. If your TV has a cable card you can plug it in and get hd channels not requiring a sdv adapter.

Channels people see with out a box are standard definition which sometimes look good depending on signal to noise ratio and the tv.

Yes, thats what I'm talking about. What's it called a qam tuner or something? Its built-in to newer tv's and you can get premium HD channels (not good looking SD channels) including ESPN and HBO WITHOUT a box. The built in tuner unscrambles the code like a box does. So essentially its a box, but its inside the tv.

Have any of y'all actually tried it with Cox in BR or are y'all just assuming it works because it should?

I have a hard time believing I did something wrong when almost all channels were in HD except for the ESPN channels.

ETA:

Seriously, is there some secret step I missed?

I cant speak for Cox in BR. My limited experience with this is Charter in Mandeville. Maybe its different.

I'm curious if it was isolated. You'd think the signal for those channels are coming through the same as others and the decoding would be the same as well.

ETA:

Where's the OP?

There is a device called a CableCARD that some TVs will accept. It decrypts the encrypted channels like a cable box does, but it doesn't give you the program guide, or certain features like on-demand and PPV ordering via the remote.

Yeah, I almost got the cablecard version but ended up just getting the HDHomerun Dual.

This was not a cablecard ready tv. He didn't even have tv service with cox, just internet, however they didn't add the filter to the line so he was getting all of the basic (2-74 or something like that) channels in HD with the exception of the the ESPN channels and a few others.

Possible, go into settings on TV and do a scan for digital channels. I've found espn hd on charter before

You still have to buy/lease a cable card from your provider. It's still basically serving as a cable box without a guide or any channel past 100. It's the same concept retard.

SD ESPN. went to the higher channels that are HD and no ESPN. The HD channels only included network stuff.

I guess cox in BR does not broadcast HD ESPN or i cannot receive HD ESPN without a box.
