Hooking up a TV antenna to sound system.

I connected my Leaf antenna to my television through the cable in port. I am trying to get the sound through my surround sound. I can't get it to play. Any suggestions.

You will need to connect your TV and surround sound with some sort of cable. The TV antenna has nothing to do with your question.

your tv needs a digital output that you would connect to an input on your surround system...you would probably need to set a setting on the tv as well

Okay I ran a digital optical cable from TV to receiver. Still didn't get any sound.

It's an analog input. You aren't going to get digital audio out on a TV using an analog (F connector) cable input. You will however be able to listen to the sound through the TV speakers.

Yeah I'm listening through the TV speakers now. Just wanted to use my room speakers.

Also, I have a hdmi cable run already from tv to receiver for my Roku.

The optical jack on the receiver is assigned to some receiver input. You need to set the receiver to that input. It should work. If it doesn't, give the make and model numbers of your TV and receiver. I see you also mentioned HDMI, and you may be able to use ARC if your equipment supports it. It's hard to give specific advice to generic questions...

did you go into the setup menu of the TV and tell it you want Audio Out instead of Internal Speakers? Also need to set format of Audio Out to Fixed. This should be in the "Sound" option of the menu

I have it set to out. But I'm going to check it again. Won't be able to do it now, wife watching Saints game.

The TV doesn't support ARC, so that's out. Optical is the correct connection. I've had Pioneer AVRs the last 5 years. There are two things to check. First, you must set the AVR to the input that the optical input you plugged into is assigned to; the jack is normally labeled with the default assignment, and unless you've changed things, that would be the input to set the AVR to. You can check the assignments in the Input Setup section of the AVR's menu system. Second, after switching to the correct input on the AVR, check the Signal Selection by pressing Signal Sel on the remote. It should be something like Optical or Digital, not HDMI or Analog or Coax.
As for the TV, the optical output is usually always active, and I doubt the problem is the TV. You may want to shut off its speakers, though, and there may be an option for that; if not, you can just turn the TV volume down all the way. There may be an option for Fixed/Variable audio output; if it affects digital output, you would want to set it to Fixed.

Did u ever get this to work? Just wondering because it definitely will work if you have the inputs programmed correctly on your receiver as previously mentioned.

Why would a Digital OTA not give you digital audio..?
