Is wink still king? Just bought a house and looking to get a learning thermostat probably a nest and a schlage connect lock. Is wink the best for these items?

Wink is coming out with an updated hub soon. Its being tested right now. I would hold out until we get more information on it.

Have about a month. How soon before it's out?

Don't lose focus son. OP says he wants to get a neat. Surely that's a typo for Nest. Get em.

Wink does have the most robust schlage connect implementation by far.

Other hubs can't access all the codes and other settings the lock has with the phone app so there's that...

I like my samsung smartthings hub. You should definitely give it some research before buying the wink blind.

Raspberry pi + zwave stick + Phillips hue software. Can use multiple automation software packages (I use homegenie). Use what you like. Hue software allows for Alexis integration.

Smart hub apparently can't work nest products without workarounds. Surely not a point in their favor.

I don't recommend raspberry pie for HA unless you have lots of free time on your hands and want to buy every radio chip separately (zwave, ZigBee, lutron, etc) then patch together a very non GUI friendly control system.

Wink and ST have all the hardware standards built in, are both inexpensive and great phone-based apps and are ready for you to add doodads immediately. Download the app.. It's free.. And see what you think.

Apple homekit is a joke. They refused to include hardware to support zwave and ZigBee.. Which is 99.9% of current HA doodads out there.

Even tigerwise will have to admit momentum is behind zwave+ with C4 coming on board now.

Cad,
I know there is a 50 page thread on this( I have read some but a lot to seems to be about pricing not actual automation) but what should be my starter items?

My initial thoughts are a hub, thermostat, door lock,Switches/dimmers/outlets.

Do I need special bulbs if I have switches/dimmers?

Any crucial items I'm missing?

Yes you have to buy separate radios, but between zwave and hue no other radios are needed. And it's NOT hard to set up. Yes openHab is, but homegenie (the one I use) is very easy to set up. And as far as a unfriendly GUI no clue where you get that from. Plus I don't have to worry about many internet going down and not being able to control my home locally.

Wink and smart hub are acceptable but not knowing the OP level of competence, he may find working with a pi enjoyable and quite easy.

I've always been a fan of Zwave and with it now getting UL listed for life-safety it's about to really be huge. However if I were doing whole home lighting I would use Lutron over Zwave.

Is it more efficient to do bulbs or switches/dimmers?
