Help with Roomba 980

I bought a Roomba 980 last week and am having trouble setting up the Roomba with the Home App. The directions are as follows:
1. download the app on a smartphone - I downloaded in on my iPhone 6
2. plug in the charger to an outlet and turn on the Roomba while it's on the charger - no problem with that
3. confirm wifi network - I picked my home wifi and entered the password correctly
4. activate the Roomba by pressing the home and target button together until beeps are heard and the wifi signal on the Roomba starts flashing - did that
5. Connect to the Roomba - go into settings on iPhone and connect to Roomba under my wireless network options, Roomba confirms audibly that I am connected
6. Go back to app and complete setup - I'm supposed to go back in the app and the app will allow me to proceed to setup cleaning schedules, check battery life, etc. However, when I return to the app, a spinning wheel like its about to load something appears but doesn't proceed. After what seems to be about 30 secs to a min, an error message says it 'failed to connect, go back and check settings."
I am doing this within the Roomba only 1 room away from my wireless modem and the rest of my devices have good wifi coverage throughout the entire house.
My wife contacted Roomba support today and they said login to my wireless router (Motorola) and ensure my routers frequency was set as 802.11 band - 2.4Ghz and 802.11 n-mode - auto. Both are set this way. It also says to make sure my security settings are set to WEP Encryption - disabled. My router has it set like that but it is greyed out so that I couldn't even click on it and change that even if I wanted to.
Any other ideas. It's been frustrating.
