i have my living room wired and two in the ceiling on my patio

i have an onkyo 606 two zone receiver in the living room so here is my question

whats the easiest way to get sound to the outdoor speakers via the zone 2 onkyo AND be able to control from my phone/ipad?

honestly why not just get an ion?

that thing is a beast and you'll be far happier with bluetooth than trying to hard-rig something to a 10 year old AVR.

ok, istr the 606 has what..3 hdmi inputs? you'll have to free one of those up or get a splitter.

then just plug in your chromecast and you're set. switch the tv to that input and then you can use your phone (iphone or android) anywhere you have WiFi to connect & play music.

that's actually better than BT..longer range.

its chok-ful of features. if you can get the typical "sub $300 refurb sale" at woot/amazon its worth it.

unlimited options, really. you can point your onkyo to your existing media library; use their 'apps' feature to run pandora, hook a chromecast or roku and use their apps, use the built-in bluetooth and connect directly from your phone...

its basically an updated 606 with wifi, bt and 178 hdmi inputs

Lol the ion is the biggest piece of shite. I've had two.

Not only is the ion a piece of shite, but the dude obviously wants a good looking mounted system. He already has his house wired for a sound system. Not a fricking piece of shite portable speaker he has to roll everywhere.

I have had one for the last three years and it is awesome. I do not have any problems with it. If you are looking for loud bumping bass, then this is not for you. My friends have nearly blown my speaker trying to get all of that bass. I'm about to buy a speaker and just solder some wires together and have a better speaker than the stock one. Anyways, I still love my ion and recommend it to everyone.

Battery is shot within a year. Has to stay plugged in to work. I know a few other people that have the same problem. If it was a good speaker, I would just replace the battery. I've heard it's nothing but a atv type battery.

The speaker is crap. It doesn't sound good turned past halfway and it's not loud enough for a decent party or tailgate. I bought a Mr DJ speaker, although it requires power. It's 20x the speaker that the ion is and has all the same features, plus some. It was only about $120 more.

The OP could get better sounding speakers (than the ion) through his sound system for the price of an ion.

We had one. Lasted about 10 months. I didn't even want to entertain the idea of replacing it with another.

I'm using a Sonos Connect on a 70's vintage receiver. I can control the Sonos from the back yard with my phone. All you need is a wifi signal. I have no complaints.

Caution on the advice from poster about plugging in the chromecast. Zone 2 on almost all receivers, including the Onkyo will only allow analog signal to the second zone. So the hdmi port or the digital audio will NOT go to zone 2. You need to have something that can be plugged into an analog jack.

Excellent point that alot of people dont realize.
If the OP buys the newer Onkyo's, however he probably wont need to use a chromecast for the purpose that was suggested above.
All of the internet music sources and/or music from mobile devices (when using Onkyo remote app) can be played though zone 2 with no problems. For cable boxes and other devices that have them available, I typically run a second set of analog cables back to my receiver for Zone 2 purposes. Roku 1's & 2's are the only streaming devices that I've seen with analog audio outputs. I use one of these on my outdoor tv

Some receivers (like my Denon) have a "party mode" that will allow a digital input to be played via analog Zone 2, but it does in turn limit Zone 1 to stereo, even if you have a multi channel Zone 1. This is not an issue if you are wanting the same content (like a football game) inside and outside simultaneously.

my bad..you are correct.

but like the other poster said, you can use the built-in onkyo apps to run spotify, pandora or just connect to your device via bluetooth.
