Avg cost is about 10K not including housing, most promise to teach you to code in about 3 months, some offering job placement assistance. They say most days include a couple hours of lecture followed by countless hours of individual and group prac app.

-has anyone done this?

- What was your knowledge before?

- Could you learn from scratch at one of these?

I am thinking of giving one a shot next year simply because I've always just wanted to know how to do the stuff, not necessarily to change career paths. Thoughts?

I'm a software engineer, so I may be a bit biased, but IMO at that price, it's better to spend time on the net or buy a ton of books.

For example - LINK .

This is probably close to what they're going to teach you in a boot camp.

well whatever i do will be payed for by GI bill so i wasn't too worried about the cost, mainly if i would be able to enter one with no knowledge. Will prob do some community college courses first.

I would guess that 95%+ of coding bootcamps are not covered by the GI Bill. I have asked the local ones in my area, who are also parts of a national chain.

if theyll cover stuff like " heavy equipment operator" school, and CDL training i don't see why another trade school type thing wouldn't be covered. gues the only way to find out is to ask

As I understand it, GI Bill pays you directly and doesn't require that it be for tuition at an accredited university. I could be mistaken but if that's the case then I guess it wouldn't hurt.

That said, what you're really paying for is advice and placement services and IMHO expensively so. You should be able to learn to code virtually for free using online resources. Then pass some vendor's certification exam and you can job-hunt.

What employers are really looking for is the ability to analyze a problem and put together a step-by-step solution. If you can do that you can catch on anywhere, and it doesn't much matter what language you learn. There are legions of "programmers" who can't actually design and construct working software.

I considered it..but to me it's too much of a risk vs. getting an actual degree. Maybe i'm wrong. I'll see what the job prospects are after i graduate

It would make more sense to get a CS degree and use that $10K towards the degree. A degree is much more valuable than some coding boot camp. However, you stated you wanted to learn programming as a hobby, I'd still invest in books in order to teach myself.
