GoPro Image Rotation question

i have the GoPro Silver 4. I'm having problems with the image rotation feature. I was trying to use this feature as I was fishing and wanted to put the camera in the water when the fish was close to the boat. I have the correct setting to "Auto" on the camera and all works fine when I just point the camera around in the standby mode. The LCD display rotates fine. As soon as I hit record, the LCD screen stops rotating. Needless to say, all my underwater shots did not come out. TIA for any help you can give me.
