Google went out of their way to show that Nest is a separate company, like Google,” said Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy, “It has to be embarrassing to Nest to get pre-empted by Home and an indicator that Google's not waiting for Nest to build out their smart home vision.”

Google just sent a clear signal that Nest will have to go it alone.

I don't hate Nest but I think their CEO is an arrogant prick who is running the company into the ground after their one hit wonder.

Have a thermostat at the office and a protect at the house. Not a fan of the thermostat but the protect is about as cool as a co/smoke detector can get. Not a fanboy of Nest but I do love CAD's hate for it.

what is better about this than my $49 Kidde? Here are the features it has:

- syncs up wirelessly with other Kidde detectors so they all go off
- wink integration sends me notification when either CO2 or smoke detector goes off or battery is getting low
- voice alert: alarm tells you whether it's detecting smoke or CO2
- Kidde is the king of smoke detectors and I feel better about trusting my family's safety to their hardware than nest since they've been doing this longer than anyone
- home depot has sales on these where you can get 3/$100 making them 1/3 the price of a nest
- battery life is roughly 1 year

What is better about nest?

Nest has a motion detector at night when it's dark it gently lights up the area when you walk by it.

(that's all I got) .

what is your setup now?

biggest hurdle is most newer homes already have a wired/battery backup smoke detector network.

with the kidde wireless you have to go big or go home

if you dont replace all of them you'll need to be aware you might have 2 different systems for awhile..the wired will all go off if one of those detects smoke & the wireless kidde network will go off..if one of those detects smoke.

this could be a concern if the kidde are on the other side of the house & go off and you don't hear them because there isn't a kidde nearby.

make sense?

also the little dipswitch sync thing is a little weird..just make damn sure you take a pic of it once you've selected a setting so you don't have to pull it off the ceiling every time you buy a new one to remember the configuration. ask me how i know.

all kidde on the same network will need the same dipswitches toggled.

i am honestly in favor of less wiring & wallfish running through my house so i am happy building out my kidde network as they go on sale because being an older house i wasnt slowly replacing my wired network.

given the lifespan of your smoke detector is 10 years, it might not be a bad idea to just go kidde when you update it. you have to buy new ones anyway.

FWIW the battery life is about the same. everyone thinks their wired smoke detector batteries will last forever..until the CHIRPING STARTS!

It was free, has a cool pathway light that illuminates with motion, and it pisses you off that I think it's cool.

There are a few addition features if it's in a Nest Eco system (which I don't have). Like shutting off the a/c and letting you know which room the smoke \ co is located and the level. It knows the difference between burnt popcorn and a house fire.

They probably just bought Nest so nobody else would and/or so they wouldn't have to compete with them standalone.

my old house had like 15

suuuucked when the batteries started making noises.

yeah if you only have 2 or 3 its a no-brainer to update them with kidde wink detectors.
