With Google Fiber preparing an expansion into Charlotte, North Carolina, incumbent cable operator Time Warner Cable is trying to hold onto customers by dramatically increasing Internet speeds at no extra charge.

"The Internet transformation will begin this summer and will include speed increases on TWC residential Internet plans at no additional cost, with customers experiencing increases up to six times faster, depending on their current level of Internet service," Time Warner Cable announced last week. "For example, customers who subscribe to Standard, formerly up to 15Mbps, will now receive up to 50Mbps, customers who subscribe to Extreme, formerly up to 30Mbps, will now receive up to 200Mbps; and customers who subscribe to Ultimate, formerly up to 50Mbps, will receive up to 300Mbps, at no extra charge."

I am sure it is just a coincidence.

it's a miracle!

The cable companies need to learn that if they beat Google to the speeds they won't lose as many customers.

IF TW would have initiated the upgrades themselves earlier they wouldn't have to pull this crap.

People inherently don't want to switch providers but they will given situations like this.

oversubscribing the shite out of their nodes and hoping users don't blow through too much bandwidth.

AT&T is doing the same thing. Laying fiber everywhere Google is getting in their market. Other than DFW which is their home market.

But that 300 down cable still isn't touching gig down fiber to your door.

where does it say TWC is laying fiber

gig>300 you terd

all cable companies have to do is reduce the distance in the last mile for customers.

There have been test if the situation is right that cable infrastructure can handle up to 800 down. Reducing the distance from the trunk to your house and making the last mile very short would help.

Is it better than fiber to you door? no but its a start.

They have already done this in the other markets where Fiber is or will be soon. I'm fine with it and don't see any reason to switch to the more expensive Google service.

how much is a 100 down with TWC?

For less than 100 bucks you get a gig down fiber to your door with google. Which is a great bang for your buck.
