I currently have two GE Zwave Wireless On Off Switches that I'm going to use for one room each. Lets say my kitchen has two switches for the same set of lights. In order for this to be able to work, will I need an Add On Switch or will I need to get the 3 Way On Off Kit and use one of the switches I already have elsewhere? From what I can tell I'll only need the add on switch and it with one of the switches I already have will essentially make up the 3 way kit.

This may have been answered in another thread, but there's a strong possibility I missed it.

Thanks for the help.

Depends on how bad you need both switches. Personally I put switch covers over the second switch for my 3 ways.

If it's 2 switches controlling one light you definitely need the 3 way smart switch and the add on if you want both to work.

I mean I really don't need to use the second switch, but it would be nice to use both spots on the walls in addition to the smart uses.

So will the add on switch and one of the ones I currently have jive?

what CAD said.

other option is to use this instead of the z-wave light switch: In-wall controller. Put this in the gang box that has the 2 wires that run to the light. This is the way I plan on dealing with my 3-way light switches.

Man, I can't really judge how big that thing is but I have a hard time believing that it's an easy fit inside a standard gang box.

I guess that's not too bad. I still think it'd be difficult though

could probably stick it in the attic as well. just have to make sure to run the 3 wires to it, instead of the 2 that would go to the light. But if you need to add wire anyway, just add a 3 wire romex from it to the switch(es). Tape new wire to the light wire when pulling it, otherwise have fun fishing. It'll handle 0-70C (32-~170F).

no

add-on only works with a switch with a zwave brain (the GE one you listed)..albeit a very very tiny brain..a brain nonetheless that costs you a cool $35

Add on switch (for a zwave main switch) is only 19. Is it worth $19 to have both switches working on a 3way?

I am in the process of putting in zwave switches for everything that makes sense. I'll use the add on switches to keep the Wife happy for the 3 / 4 way setups.

I have 3 add-on switches set up. I paid $19 for each as well. I say do it if it makes the wife happy

So I can buy a brain and have one of the switched I currently have as the second switch?

No, you can cap the 2nd switch or use an add on switch.

That's what I just asked about the add on switch and was told no.

For a Zwave switch you need the main switch (brain) and the addon switch for a 3 way configuration. You can elect to not use the addon switch and remove (CAP) the non load switch in the 3 way setup.

yes, in simpler language:

3 way switch options (if installing smart switch)
- install smart switch, cap or cover second switch
- install smart switch and add-on switch
- leave second switch alone and when the wife flips it, your smart switch stops working

Snipen, did you see that i found the switches at the Cortana Lowes? The workers just had no clue where they were for the online orders. I left a three way combo and a few dimmer switches there tuesday.

Same style packaging for the switches and outlets.

if you haven't installed anything, you have a house full of 17 cent contractor switches.

if you have 2 switches controlling the same light, you have 2 19 cent 3 way contractor switches.

anything you change will require a smart switch and an add-on or cap the second switch.

make sense?

Yes thanks for not cleaning them out! I picked up 2 of the combo 3ways. I left the single dimmers since they were $19.99. Strange how they were $9.99 when I ordered last week and now they are 19.99.
