I just got back into running and need a new sports watch (my old Timex Ironman crapped out)...in reading about it for the first time today, seems like the FitBit Surge may be what I want. Long battery life (well, longer than the Apple Watch), GPS, syncing with iphone, etc seems to make it a good buy.

What are the cons about this device?

Look into the Microsoft band as well. Just got one last week and chose it over the Surge.

I will probably wait to get an apple watch. I want something that is fitness focused first.

I looked into it but wasn't a fan of the look of it, although I do like Fitbit's products. I have a Fitbit one and it's never given me issues. I like the look of the Fitbit Charge better.

As far as fitness/smart bands I really liked the Garmin Viviosmart and the Microsoft Band from the research I did, with the Vivosmart probably being my top choice.

I got the charge hr. Really like it. I looked at the surge but I couldn't find 100 dollars worth of added value over the charge hr.

MS Band is awesome...check it out first. I never have to pull my phone out of my pocket to check on texts/email/calls/alerts. Plus it does all the fitness stuff.

I had one and took it back. The HR monitor was very inaccurate and often lost my pulse completely.

I've been thinking about something fitness related as well. Just read this article on Yahoo that gives decent reviews on many of the options. I'm leaning Fitbit Surge or Charge at this point. Mainly because FitBit would pair with my HealthMiles program at work and I could ditch the pedometer they gave me. Just can't decide if I want GPS and the bigger screen or something more discreet. I already wear a watch, so it will be worn on my right wrist during the day and I'd only switch it to my left when I take the watch off for a run or bike ride.

If you're looking for in-depth reviews on fitness gadgets, DCRainmaker is the place to go. Guy does very thorough reviews.

I returned mine after three days. I simply did not like the size of the device on my wrist. Felt too bulky.

I have had a surge for about 6 months now.

GPS is quite accurate, and the battery life is pretty good (I charge mine once every 4 days with a lot of GPS usage). I like mine, but also use the steps function and sleep pattern stuff.

If you just want a GPS watch for running, look at the garmin 10. I have one of those as well and thought it was great (plus cheaper). But I wanted the steps and sleep functionality of the fitbit.

It automatically detects when you're sleeping and sends it to the app for you. I used to use a Charge HR before I replaced it with a Garmin Fenix 3.

I've lost 55 lbs by doing the following. ..
1. Eat less
2. Exercise more
3. Log everything I eat into myfitnesspal
4. Link myfitnesspal app to my activity tracker app

DC Rainmaker is a great site and on YouTube Rizknows is good too if you want info on activity and fitness trackers.

It shows your sleep pattern throughout the night: restless vs deep sleep vs awake. it isn't super fancy, but i tend to look at it and conpaee with my perceived sleep quality and what i did that day to improve my sleep.

This. Had my MS band since the day it was released in October. Still wear it every day and use it all the time. They are constantly adding updates to it as well to make the band even better.
