I'm about to get 25 Mgps fiber optic internet connection. The connection will be via ethernet cable. I want to connect wifi on my own, not through cable company. The fiber optic company said they do not use modems and I would not need one to connect my own wifi. Anybody have experience with this? Would you suggest a modem/router combo despite what the company says? What purpose would a modem serve? If this combo is recommended, what brand would you suggest? If only a router is needed, what brand would you suggest?
Thanks for any input!

You don't need a modem with LUS. I have an ASUS that I like but the model will depend on what your needs are and if you might up your speed at some point.

How many devices are you connecting (hardwired and wireless) and what's the furthest distance from where you are installing the router that you expect to get a signal?

Thanks for your response.
I am planning to have one hardwired and one wireless connection. The furthest distance for wifi signal to reach is 100 feet.

For your current need something like this $25 router would be sufficient. However, your setup could change in a year and the router might not be able to handle the additional connections/range/speed. Personally I'd pay the extra $8 for this router so you can use it as an extender or access point at just about any time in the future, but if you upgrade to a download speed greater than 50 or so the router will be the bottleneck.

Of course, if you'd rather just get a router you expect to work for any situation in the next 5 years you can drop $300.

I know that your profile shows you are in lafayette but I wanted to share with you one issue I recently encountered with EATEL out of Ascension.

We have a 50 Mbs subscription. I recently ran a speedtest (directly connected to the ethernet jack provided by the ISP) and found 7Mbs down, 1.5Mbs up. I called Eatel and they said, "The card on the side of your house is an older model and cannot run at that speed. We will send someone out to replace it." 14 days later, they replaced the card.

I had been paying for the 50Mbs service for 2 months prior to catching the service degradation. I absolutely recommend you run a speedtest on the day your service starts.

With the new card, I get the 50Mbs download speeds at the jack. Can't remember the upload speed.

Great idea to do a speed test while the tech is still here. I appreciate the info regarding your experience.
Thank you!
