External TV speaker issue: works for cable (RCA) but not game console (HDMI)

Running external sound system through RCA plug-ins on TV. Cable will play through the external speakers, but game console (hooked up through HDMI port) only plays through the TV speakers.
Any tips?

i think i had this issue before.. had to go into the actual game settings and adjust them..
optical works nice too.. but it may just be changing your audio out settings on your game console settings.
