i know i'm missing something very easy, but i have a calendar spreadsheet covering multiple years.

i divide monthly by 12 to get monthly average for each year.

for 2017, the year isn't complete so how could i make the average accurate for the months so far?

is there a way to note if certain cells are empty and change the divider from 12 months to only the number of months with values in the cells so far?

yes cad is a moron. come at me.

How is the spreadsheet setup?

You could use month() to get the number of the month you're interested in.

Countif() or counta() or count() will do what you ask though

=average(range)

As long as you don't have 0 in the months that haven't happened yet.

yup that did the trick. didn't realize that wouldn't average empty cells.

thank you!
