Dumb question about SMS and MMS

If I use a SMS texting app, does that mean I won't be able to get pictures or be in group messages?
Some background:
I have an LG G3 and I've had texting issues recently. I hate the stock app so I've been using textra. Recently I've had issues with not getting messages from people. There are just random texts that I won't get. So I then tried hangouts and it was fine until I couldn't get a picture someone sent to me and while I haven't tried group texting in it, I'm assuming that will give me problems too. I've heard good things about Google messenger but it looks like it's just SMS. So idk if that will be a problem.
This issue is really starting to get on my nerves. All these years and it looks like android still doesn't have a clear cut answer to the texting issues. Any advice would be appreciated

You can get mms on messenger. Textra should work though

Textra works great for me except I'm not getting messages from people every now and then. I'm not having an mms issue with them.

Have you tried upping the mms limit? It's under mms settings. I get missing messages sometimes.

Isn't the limit 600kb for AT&T? I've had group message issues on textra before and I thought it was because my message size limit was too high.

Interesting. I thought I read it was 600kb for att. Hopefully that'll work because other than this issue, I love textra
Only thing I don't get is, some of the messages I don't get are one sentence messages. So I would think those would fit under the size limit I had

I get those seldomly too. I don't know what that issue is. It's always a group message that messes up
