I want to get one of those lower end drones for my kid for Christmas. Anybody know which ones are worth getting? I would prefer that it last a while.

i've started to hate those fricking things with a passion.
any event you go to these days there are a few buzzing around.
its way worse than the cellphone epidemic.

I am willing to spend about 100 bucks. I just don't want to go 500. Is 100 too low to get something fun for a kid?

FYI, drone operators will have to register with the government by Feb 2016.

Does it need a camera?
Does it really need to be a "drone" with programmable flight, or just a manual quadcopter?
Any particular size?
I have a micro quadcopter. They are cheap and fun as hell to fly.

quote:Nah, I don't think so. A kid will have fun with just about anything, You pay for what you get though. If you want something that's going to last a while and not break, $100 is probably too cheap imo. It just depends on what all you want it to do.

That is what I think I am looking for. I just didn't know what to call it.

Buy this
and then buy another without the remote
also get the prop guards
My son has played with this thing for a year. I am amazed how well the thing can fly outside.
Everything i said will cost you about $100.00.
We wrecked 1 then later broke the other. Between the 2 we've been able to keep one going for about a year. (With a little diy repair)

I have a cheap Syma that is fun to fly but you certainly get what you pay for in this case. The cheap ones are not GPS guided. Meaning if the wind is blowing, you go to far and lose signal, get in a sticky situation you're pretty much screwed. The ones without the GPS you actually have to fly the entire time. They won't just hover and stay in place like a GPS one. Most with the GPS have "home" button where all you do is press that button and it returns to where it took off from. It will also automatically return home when it senses the battery getting low. You can fly in any mph winds because it stabalizes itself.
The cheaper ones are still certainly fun to fly.

You have to expect they are going to break.
At that price you can buy one for parts.
The best part is they fly like champs. It amazed me. The thing hauls in expert mode.
Do not fly indoors in expert mode.

Yes the syma ones are perfect first drones. Bought 2 of the ones linked below last year. Very good for the price. Does flips and stuff, but is easy to fly. Very durable too. Prop gaurds will get it permanently stuck in a tree. Had one blow down 4 days later due to heavy rain storm and it still worked well. Camera was impressive
Get the multi charger and 3-4 extra battery for $10-15. Well worth it.
Warning: does not hold up well against a yellow lab in hot pursuit.
