Does anyone feel comfortable giving PC monitor advice?

I am not sure if anyone here knows much about monitors, but mine has died. It lasted 10+ and it was an off brand, so I am pretty happy that it lasted as long as it did. The bad news is there have been advances and innovations in monitors in the last 10 years, so I feel a bit out of my depth with trying to look for a new one.

If anyone can help I am looking for one that can handle gaming -- I am not sure of the correct terminology but basically good response time, color depth -- I am also looking for one that can handle being an everyday monitor as well. I fiddle with some photoshop too on the side, so I would like something that has good color resolution.

I have been trying to do some research, but I am overwhelmed. I am not sure what a TN, IPS, etc. does. I don't know if I should get 60hz, 144hz, or something else. Is 4k worth it? G-Sync, Freesync...no idea. I have an nvidia GX 470 video card (I am not sure if that is relevant). 24 inch? 27 inch?

Anyway I am not sure how much help I will be to narrow it down. My cap budget is 350 (could go a tad higher for a great deal, but absolutely no more the 400, my wife would kill me).

Help/Adive would be great. I am hunting around the webs and I do not feel any better than when I started and I have been looking for about a month (current monitor started to become very slow with waking up, so I figured it was getting to be time).

With that video card, you should stick to a $100-$130 22-24" 1920x1080 monitor.

The two most important things for me would be IPS for its good viewing angles and color, and semi-glossy, non-grainy AR coating. I would go with 1920x1200 over 1920x1080 any day.

The HP Z24i fit the bill for me a couple of years ago at around $200. It has very good color OOTB, though the automated calibration with Calman and my i1D3 did improve it a little. If I were looking today, I'd see if uniformity and CMS controls were available at my price range. Last I looked, they were in the $700+ monitors.

I would recommend a couple for you however as with anything else there are trade offs.

IPS has far better viewing angles, and much greater color reproduction. These panels will be very pleasing to look at. However they suffer in the refresh rate/response time department.

TN obviously has higher refresh rates and lower response timing however, they just dont come close to the color reproduction depth/quality when next to an IPS panel monitor.

So my question is how serious of a gamer are you? obviously with that graphics card the higher refresh rate wont be needed. The 2-3ms lower response time prob isnt as well for you.

If you want the best of the both worlds (panel types) you will spend 700+ish

Not a serious gamer as far as I'm not a MMO player, but I enjoy games like Witcher and Fallout, so I play, but mostly stick to single player games.

I know games keep pushing the envelope of what typical PCs can do. I guess I would rather something solid that won't be a dinosaur in 5 years, but it doesn't have to be a top of the line monitor. I don't have the rig for that anyway. I have a feeling that whatever I get will be a huge upgrade over what I have been using. For example, I just got a sound bar and it is amazingly better than my built in TV speakers.

Keep in mind that whatever monitor you get will likely be significantly higher resolution than your decade-old monitor, which means games will suffer in performance unless you lower in-game resolution to what you were playing with before. Any plans to upgrade your rig?

Possibly. I could post my specs when I get home from work and so you guys can see what I am working with, if that would be helpful. I generally add parts every so often (for example I recently added a SSD). I might go with a better video card, but it seems like those upgrade pretty often and I am always chasing the technology/compatibility.
