Bare with me, I want to buy a surround sound speaker system for my living room and am pretty green about all this.

My TV has a Digital audio out slot. I don't have a DVD player. I have a Xbox360 connected to the TV via component cables for games/DVDs. Most movies I watch are on my laptop which I connect to the TV via HDMI.

If I buy a theater system and connect the amplifier to the TV via Digital audio out, will that send all sound from the TV to the speakers? Or do I need to connect the laptop and Xbox to the amplifier?

Some (most) TV's only pass through 2.0 sound through their optical out and not multi channel surround sound. It really depends on your particular TV.

LINK

Edit: to answer your question- you will get sound through your speakers, but the quality may be missing

Yes. Turn off the TV speakers in your TV settings and the sound will then come from the speakers attached to your amplifier.

You don't have a cable box in the mix at all?

Negative, I'm stationed in Germany. If I want to watch TV I'll watch Slingbox through my laptop.

To jennyjones,
This is my TV

Most new Sony tv's allow multichannel pass through, so you should be good to use optical back to your receiver.

If your receiver has an HDMI output, it would probably be better to run an HDMI from your receiver to TV and then run everything back through your receiver. It should work either way though

HDMI switch with optical in and optical out is a good solution. My Samsung tv doesn't have multichannel out through optical so that little box taking all my inputs and outputting the multichannel audio has been excellent.

This is the one I have

ARC HDMI (Audio Return Channel) : Yes

If you get a receiver that supports ARC, you can run an HDMI cable from your receiver to TV to pass the audio. This is how I have my setup.
