Cox internet speeds ?

I currently have the ultimate package (up to 300mbps) and decided to do a few different speed tests tonight and see what I'm actually pulling.

After 3 sites, I consistently pulled between 8-9mbps download and upload. I was connected via wired not wifi fwiw.

So this tells me what, exactly? Should I just bump my speeds down to the other plan which is up to 15mbps? My internet seems fine and I rarely have any problems.

I stream mostly everything I watch, also.

You should contact Cox and have them figure out the issue. Do you mean the other plan up to 150? Is your modem provided by Cox? If not, is it an ancient modem?

With cable internet the time of day can greatly impact your speeds due to sharing node bandwidth with the other connected homes. Try again on a non peak time to see if it gets better. Regardless of you results you should be complaining to Cox about this.

You sure your test didn't read MBps? That's mbps x 8. Not the same thing.

Holy shite!!! I thought I was getting fricked bad. They're reaming you out with a Louisville Slugger.

I was paying for 150 and getting 30-50. I ditched the combo modem/router and bought my own equipment. Not top of the line but quality stuff. I'm regularly hitting 150-170. Last night I hit over 200.

This. I'm on the same package and when I signed up for Cox, my speeds were like 16-20 mbps so I called in and they fixed it so now I'm getting over 200. If not, go get yourself a custom router or modem.

Update....


Holy hell of a convo with cox. They brought a tech out here and he was only getting up to 10mbps on my lines.

They refunded me my money back from the past 5 months and I dropped my package down to "Internet Essential" which goes up to 15mbps.

The tech said because of my house and how far I am away, this is the most that I'll be getting unless I wanted to run my own line directly to my house which would cost me out the arse.

So out of the whole ordeal, I got refunded for 5 months, dropped my package down since I can only get like 10mbps. fricking crooks.

How far away are you? Over 300 feet?

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it as well. In the digital world, it either works or it doesn't work. That's the simple explanation without getting technical. To me, the drop is bad, and that tech was one lazy POS.

Agreed. Doesn't seem like you could compare it to a voltage drop. It's not like there's just one long cable and whoever is at the end gets shitty service.

It does work as a voltage drop, but it has to be within specifications to work. Time to get technical:

You have two signals to worry about which are downstream power and upstream power. The downstream power has to be between -8 dbmV and +10 dbmV. The upstream power has to be no higher than 52 dbmV.

If the downstream power is too weak, it isn't going to work. If it's too strong, it isn't going to work. If the upstream power is too strong, it isn't going to work. Think of it as a pipe bursting because of too much pressure on the strong side and not enough pressure on the low signal end.

The tap value will have everything to do with the upstream power. There is an amp on the other side of the tap that automatically adds 20 dbmV to the power. If you're on a 23 tap, you're automatically at a 43 upstream at the tap. Then, you have to account for cable loss, splitter loss and barrels/ground block. The way you get around a 23 tap with multiple connections is by using a unity gain amp in place of the root splitter.

For downstream power, you're working in reverse. If you start out at 14 dbmV at the tap, you subtract your cable loss, splitter loss and barrel/ground block loss. If you have 100 feet of RG6, you're going to lose right at 4 dbmV on the downstream power. If you have a drop that is longer than 150 feet from the tap to the ground block, you had better use RG11. It will only lose 2 dbmV per 100 feet. If you're an unlucky soul that has an RG59 drop, you're going to lose 5 dbmV per 100 feet.

I've seen modems crap out at +11.75 dbmV, but the TV still works slowly. I've seen it take a while for channels to change on the TV with a 53 dbmV upstream. If you get the signal down with specification, it works.

So basically, it works or it doesn't work. I'm guessing the cable drop is bad, and the tech was too lazy to run a new line. The tech should have went to the tap, took readings, walked off the distance of the drop, did the math and took readings on each side of the ground block. If the signal dropped off too much, he should have ran a new drop. If it didn't, start investigating inside between the homerun and the root splitter. Then, from the splitter to the outlet.

But the actual world in which digital things operate is analog. Also, your modem converts the digital signals into analog signals for transport over the coax. That's what modem means -- modulator-demodulator.

Your connection can be impacted by all sorts of things that make it "kind of" work. Really it's the protocols and error correction that makes it sort of work with a bad signal rather than a go-nogo situation.

They did, took a lot of complaining and the tech ticket to Cox to make it right.

To be honest, I think the tech was full of shite and I honestly could careless how fast my internet is as long as I can stream without buffering.

But when I pay almost $100 a month for internet and this entire time I could've been paying $40, that pisses me off. It's business, I get it but I was overpaying for a service I never was actually receiving.

That's like ordering a 16oz steak and they get to the table with 4oz of meat and expect you to pay full price for it.
