Has anyone gotten a letter from their internet provider about copyright infringement for streaming movies via Kodi?

If so, what did you do?

....asking for a friend

Are you just streaming, or downloading and hosting?

Are you using the ISP provided modem and router at your house?

Comcast Starts Issuing Copyright Infringement Notices to Kodi Users

quote:

Many of Kodi’s unofficial add-ons use peer-to-peer streaming that does not hide your IP as you are both downloading the file you are streaming and sharing it with other users who want to watch the same show as you watch the show. Often users of these 3rd party unofficial add-ons are unaware they re-sharing the file in a similar way to how Bittorrent works.

In the case of the report above the Comcast subscriber was using a 3rd party unofficial Kodi add-on on a Fire TV Stick.

Until now there haven’t been any reports of Kodi users being hit with lawsuits or copyright claims that are so popular with bittorrent users. Yet it is possible to track users of peer-to-peer streaming services similarly to how bittorrent users are tracked.

there's lots of ways around this. i have never gotten an infringement letter and i've never resorted to a VPN.

here are a few tips
- dont use something so obviously in use by the masses that comcast/att/google will be able to detect the signature for eventually to either block or send you nasty letters in the mail.

- if downloading a torrent, you sure as hell shouldn't leave it seeding. wait for it to download (shouldnt take more than 5-10 minutes at most these days) then DELETE THE DAMN SEED so you don't leave your PC open for random 'sniffing' by comcast.

- dont download from a well-known site like piratebay. you think comcast is going to ignore the request to pirate bay for torrent data when you're routing that through their docsis3 aka 'comcast listening inside' modem?

- the more obscure/private the tracker or app, the less likely comcast or att is going to spend their energy to chase it and you down. if you blatantly install KODI with a bunch of vanilla default-settings copyright-violation add-ons, they're going to be on you like white-on-rice.

Is there a way to prevent yourself from unknowingly sharing files with others? How do you protect yourself from this?

Edited to say Posted right after cad explanation... I see it above me!

Are there ways to change the default settings in kodi to be more protective of the add ons?

I don't ever download... But the way I understood the article cad posted was even if you are streaming you are sharing the files with others?? I didn't think that's the way it was.. I thought you had to download it in order to share not stream it..

Is that how comcast does it? With Cox, you don't get a notice unless Cox is notified by the copyright holder that they caught your IP seeding. Otherwise, they aren't paying attention or at least don't care.

When I had U-Verse, I was pretty reckless with my torrenting and never got a notice from AT&T. When I switched to Cox, I recall getting two notices within a couple of days of each other. I switched to private trackers which solved the problem. I don't use any VPN for Cartoon HD or Kodi/Genesis/whatever.

Yeah, it depends on the service you use. Genesis is one-way (i.e. not torrent-based, no seeding). PopcornTime, which is basically obsolete, is torrent-based, so you are seeding while you're watching the movie.

comcast probably paying closer attention since their parent also owns a studio.

yessir.

also read up on 'docsis3' and you'll understand a bit more why comcast deactivated all modems that don't contain this in the last few years.

basically it gives them alot more tools to 'assist' you if you are having trouble with your connection.

i had a problem with them about this recently. i purchased a docsis 3 modem 5-6 years ago in anticipation of the requirement. the modem i bought was on their list of approved modems. when i moved and got it service connected at new house, i had no problem until i later tried to add cable tv service. they told me my modem wasn't one of their approved modems. i told them BS, i had used it for over 5 years with no problems and it was formerly on their approved list. it took me 7-8 reps before i finally got a tech dept guy to just manually add my modem. i've noticed that the usage tracker on my account does not work - i wonder if it is due to the modem? if they can't track my usage, can they not track my history either?

Cox doesn't own the content. Comcast owns some of the actual content and content providers so they have more of a vested interest in it.

Seems a bit fricked up to let the owners of the infrastructure also own the companies providing content to be consumed over the infrastructure. Talk about a conflict of interest.

For their sake, I hope not.

If you blindly install kodi with any addon, think it's okay, and do whatever you want and get caught, you deserve every bit of a penalty for your ignorance and stupidity.
