Kodi itself isn't illegal and has way more legit uses besides unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content. It just happens to also be a convenient way of getting that content.

I have Kodi on my computer, but can't convince the wife to go w/o dvr functionality. Have you found an add/on that works with a guide to stream live content? I tried a few, but all didn't work very well. Although, I may have Kodi set up wrong. It keeps telling me there are connection to the database issues.

No, there is no cord-cutting solution for wives who can't let go of the DVR/Channel Surfing format and/or need to watch one or more trashy reality TV shows live. If there were a solution, I wouldn't be paying $100/mo for Uverse.

-I am unable to watch prime movies even though I have a prime account. It keeps giving me that sign up screen every time I try to play a movie. Is it because I am not the primary on the account?

What does she record? Just about every tv show is available on demand from Kodi repositories such as Genesis. Best thing for a newbie is to install TVMC. It is Kodi with Genesis, Phoenix and a few other popular repositories pre-installed. Then get Sportsdevil and watch about any televised sport in the world. The Snooker world championships are coming on in a hour.

Streaming a centrally hosted file is safer than torrenting. The warning letter you get from your ISP is a result of the owner of the content (or an organization representing them) monitoring IP addresses of seeders--low-hanging fruit--on a torrent tracker and reporting them to their respective ISPs.

Ok so if i get a letter then don't worry about it? or is there something that can be done?

No, if you do get a letter from your ISP, you do not need to respond or otherwise contact anyone (unless the letter tells you to), but you should take action to prevent getting another letter (e.g., VPN). Some ISPs have a 3-strike rule before they terminate your account. Others, like Cox, have a less-definitive policy (I've heard it was a 10+-strike rule with varying consequences). The letter will tell you what you were caught pirating/sharing, so you'll know where you went wrong. I used to torrent on public trackers pretty freely, but out of the blue I got an infringement email from Cox twice in one week years ago. So, I started using a VPN and/or private trackers. If I ever get a letter for something I streamed from a Kodi add-on, I'll start using a VPN for that, too.

I haven't looked into how to do it because I haven't needed to yet, but I'm sure there's a way. Just Google it. Odds are, if I did need it, it may be easier for me to just use VPN through my router.

So I can get everything DirecTV offers including live TV? No DVR, but can't you just search and watch episodes that have already broadcast? What about local channels?

I'm not the person to ask about all this, as what I've found personally is miles away from being worthy of cord-cutting. I haven't made that big of an effort to dig for a solution to get content from every single cable channel, but I've yet to find a centralized alternative to cable/dish that delivers the same content live. Lots of ways to download the shows hours or a day after it's aired, but you aren't going to be able to watch Walking Dead or Kardashians etc. for free until it's been aired and some generous cable subscriber has uploaded it somewhere.
