Is there a cost savings of buying a non-smart TV?

I have fire TV so it's redundant and the interface of smart TVs are awful.

Yes.

Check out Samsung UN43J5000 (dumb) vs UN43J5200 (smart). Price difference is about $45 (about 10%) on Amazon.

yes, just bought a couple non-smart Visios at Sams... reasonably cheaper than the smart versions.

Yeah I never use any of my smart tv's functions because they are slow and not as good as my roku or Firestick

Increasingly, no.

I feel you. Just consider it a "free" feature that you're not going to use, and have the smart feature as a backup.

I have a TCL Roku television in my in-home gym. The interface (for all practical purposes a built in Roku 3 - but no voice option that I know of) is fantastic, but it's coupled with a TCL set (so the picture quality is middling at best).

You pays your money and you takes your chances - I think the built-in smart interfaces are --- slowly --- getting better, but Vizio and others make a lot of sets and seem to view the smart interface as an afterthought.

unless it's the LG WebOS 2.0. I can't stand using the smart features on TV's. So I use a roku or android box on all of mine.

I just got 2 new TV's for our place and noticed that all the major TV brands carry "dumb" TV's.

Most smart interfaces suck, but for me I think no matter how good they get, I would still prefer the smarts to be a separate device. With it built in, you have to learn a new interface every time you get a new TV. And if you have several TVs that are different brands, you have to kind of switch mental gears when using the different interfaces and remotes. That seems kind of dumb to me, actually, and the only smart way to handle smart TVs is to consider the TV a monitor and standardize the smarts across your TVs with the interface/device you like.

Why disable? Is just not using it not good enough? What kind of TV?
