Can I use my own wireless router with a company's (Charter's) free modem?

About to sign up for Charter Spectrum for my new house. I would usually just go buy the modem since it's cheaper to get my own than pay a monthly fee for multiple years. But since it's free, I'm thinking about just going with it.

I already have a nice wireless router, but Charter says it's $5/month extra (as a promotional internet offer instead of the usual $20/month ) to "activate" wireless. Do I really need them to activate wireless if I have my own router already?

Curious if anyone has experience here and/or has a suggestion.

You shouldn't need them to activate anything past the modem.
You should be able to plug in your own router and not have any problems.

Awesome! Hopefully their free modem is decent enough. All we do is stream Netflix to one screen and peruse the internet. Occasional Youtube upload.

I have Charter Internet using their free modem. I use my own router. No $5/month, no problems.

Free, no wifi modem and hooked AirPort Extreme to it. No issues.
