So the kid joined the MTB team this year, and I got tasked with putting together the end of the year slide show. Since I'm only one person, I sent a message to the team parents that if they had any images from the year that they were willing to let me use from practices races etc, to upload them to a google drive. No problem and I got a great response. Awesome, and thanks!

But as I'm working with the files, the HEIC files that the vast majority of apple users are uploading are a PITA to work with. Since they are so compressed, they editing software I'm using (Sony Vegas of some iteration) lags every time it opens one up. So I have to load all the HEIC files into light room and export them as jpgs to work with them. It's not THAT difficult, but it's just one extra step to deal with. It adds up when your crunched for time at home and work. AND I have to go shoot the team photo tonight....

All of this because Apple refuses to let people add cheap, upgradable and removable storage (microSD cards) to their phones. Apple's solution is to have all your photos stored in the could and to do this they have to go to ultra "efficient" compression to maximize the number of photos people can take. #RantOff

And when I asked for video, wouldn't you know it, EVERY video I got from parents (apple and android users) was vertical video. My solution? I created a triptych video. Three vertical videos that play at the same time. It was a ton of work as I had to export them all to 1028 pixels tall and then align them (My poor laptop crapped the bed multiple times trying to render 3 HD videos and the same time. )

Sounds more like a you problem. there's professional stuff being created entirely within Apple's ecosystem on the reg.

Yeah, I'm am just volunteer.

And you're right, but so am I. Apple makes stuff unnecessarily complicated because of marketing and design choices.

Apple mobile devices have effortlessly taken and read photos in this format for years, but your laptop running Vegas shits itself when opening one of these images up. It sounds like your laptop sucks, no need to take your frustration out on Apple users though.

HEIF uses half the storage/bandwidth to store and transmit image data at the same quality as JPEG (depending on who you ask ). It's been 6 years since Apple began supporting it in iOS, when is it OK for the rest of the world to move on from what your "poor laptop" can handle?

I hate both of you. Make it look like shite as originally rendered, and educate dumbasses on the error of portrait mode.

I thought triptych videos on X annoyed me, and then it started occasionally showing up on PornHub. The hate is real.

That particular clip only runs for 4.5 seconds. But I hear you. It was a heck of a lot of work for 4.5 seconds.

The files render in the video without issue. Where the problem presents itself it in the preview mode. EVERY HEIC image was slow to load and dropped frames. I converted them to the format that every other manufacture in the world uses, and they preview just fine. The exact same image, at the same resolution, just in another format. So it's a logical conclusion to blame it on they file type.

There's a reason that there are dozens of "HEIC to JPG" apps on the web and in the play store.

HEIF is not an Apple-created format (unlike Google's WebP image format they push to speed up websites in exchange for improved SEO scores). Some Android devices use it as default, and it was developed by the MPEG group, is an ISO standard and many devices from many manufacturers support it. Not only does it provide greater compression than JPEG but it can do higher color depth, HDR, etc.

HEIF decoding is more intensive than JPEG decoding, but is far more parallelizable than JPEG decoding, so as file sizes get larger and core counts increase in modern devices, it will pay off more and more. Maybe your software is using a shitty single-threaded implementation? Or you have some ancient single core laptop? The rest of the world doesn't need to waste bandwidth, storage, and available processing capacity so you can video edit on your "poor laptop."

Yeah, because JPEG is one of the most common file formats in history and there are decades of devices and software that work with it. By your same reasoning, the dozens of VGA-to-HDMI adapters Amazon sells is evidence VGA is the superior display technology.

From your own stupid article

You will also need the HEVC Video Extensions package installed. This costs $0.99. There was once a way to get it for free, but that trick no longer works.

Durrrrrr. Just pay the 99 cents it's as easy as that.

To be fair, this thread has very little to do with Apple USERS, outside the vertical video complaint which is in no way limited to Apple users.

99.9999%+ of all pictures and videos taken by Apple products are for personal use, maybe to share or send to a friend with zero fricks given about file format, they just want it to work. But you want them to recreate their whole ecosystem for the one in a million time that you have to edit some videos and it takes you longer because you don’t have the right equipment.

I said my computer had no problem viewing the files. I said my video editor was slow to open and close them when previewing the video(s) I was creating. Which makes perfect sense if you think about how much they are compressed.

So yeah, that clunky way you posted will work on a file by file basis, and take forever to complete. OR, I could just drop all of the 200-300 files that people sent me in Adobe Lightroom, click "Export to Jpg" and 30 seconds later be done with the whole process.

Look, I totally get WHY apple chose this file format, I said as much in my original post. My mental frustration here is that there's a simple solution to the problem, yet apple's greed (and let's be honest, that's all it is) prevents that solution from being implemented. And you're 100% right, this is a one in a million type of thing, and I found an easy workable solution to the issue. I guess what I'm saying is, I personally, (and opinions are like @$$holes) don't feel that there was a need to re-create the wheel. So other than being out a couple of mins to process the files, this is just me complaining to complain. If you re-read my original post, there is a bit of self deprecating humor in there, so if one is smart enough to read between the lines, they can tell the OP wasn't 100% serious in tone.

And Apple still makes video sharing to Android users in texts as miserable as possible.

When I get a video from an apple user I delete it without even trying to play it.

Eta and don't blame it on the mms standard. Only apple has the "make extra shitty" algorithm that makes it 30 pixels, drops the framerate to 2fps and adds am radio noise to the audio.
