I've not bought/sold anything on CL in years. But looking for a new smartphone and i'm noticing half of them are deals too good to be true, and they dont look local.

Surely these are scams, right? And if so, what is their goal? paypal scam or something?

Just curious what to avoid and why.

For example... Iphone 6 64GB - $220??

I've purchased numerous phones on craigslist. Most of them are too goo to be true. You will find ones with VERY good prices but they more than likely are lost/stolen or have a bad ESN.

listings like the one you linked with the email spelled out stupidly are bullshite

clarkmicheel (A T) g ma il (DOT) c o m

also, if you do meet up with someone to make the purchase, do it at whatever carrier you're with to make sure the phone can be activated without issue

First get the imei number and see if it's been blacklisted. If it hasn't meet at a carrier store and make sure it's working 100% before handing over the money. Even if you're careful there's nothing stopping someone from reporting the phone lost or stolen and the carrier will blacklist it. It's a risk you run from buying used online.

Of course there is a chance it's legit. There are a lot of people that think the $300 you pay for a 64gb iPhone 6 is what the phone costs. They have no clue it's subsidized. I bought a Galaxy S II Skyrocket about a month after it came out for the upgrade price from someone on Craigslist. When I picked it up the guy told me he couldn't believe how fast people started calling him.

My thoughts were, either some of them are legit, or there are a bunch of people that fall for the scam. Because you've got to sort through probably half of the posts to find ones that look normal.

The fact that it says "Please or text me at" and then they don't provide a number or "MAIL TO ME - clarkmicheel (A T) g ma il (DOT) c o m" leads me to think it's fake. Ask for the imei and see what happens. They could give you one that will come back as clean and it's not the one for that phone but meeting at a carrier store will tell you right away if the phone can be activated on your account.

Craigslist is better than ebay. You get to see the phone and test it before you buy.
