Just noticed that my new smart tv is showing 720p instead of 1080p when watching att u verse. What's the deal?

Nothing is really broadcast in 1080p. You'll get 720p from over the air TV most of the time. You can get 1080p from Blu-ray.

You can go in Uverse settings and switch it to 1080i. It looks no different whatsoever though. That's the best you'll do on u-verse.

Your box probably has a setting to control output, and it may be configured to output 720p at all times. See what other options there are. If it has 1080p, it's probably the best option assuming the box is able to scale and deinterlace as well as the TV.

HDTV is 720p or 1080i, never 1080p. ABC, FOX, FX, and ESPN are all 720p. NBC, CBS, AMC, and most other channels I watch are 1080i.

I think DirecTV is the only one that offers anything in 1080p, and its only their on demand stuff.

Thanks.. It has a good picture, I was just curious. Anyone have any ideas to hide my wiring on a huge, existing brick fireplace? Just mounted it.

1080P is not an option. I'm a U-verse subscriber.

I'd go with 1080i then and consider 720p only if I were suspicious the conversion was causing problems. When using cable boxes, I learned to avoid letting the box output the channel native resolution due to delays in changing channels and Sony TVs that would loudly pop when doing so. It's much smoother to output the same resolution at all times. My HTPC of course is 1080p.
