I'm slowly upgrading everything in my house.

Next on my list:

App controlled thermostat and a "ring" type doorbell.

Need the tech boards advice on which are the best to buy?

You can do it either way.

Maybe I am missing something, but what good is a wifi doorbell?

You can turn that feature off. I have a nest and I like it, but I wouldn't buy one now based on the fact they were going out of business last I heard. If they go out of business, I doubt they support the app which is the main function of it. That was a while back, not sure of the recent status of that.

I've got a Honeywell. Control it from my phone. Love it. Bought at home depot for maybe $100

Get the Sensi. I have Ecobees on my downstairs units and a Sensi on the unoccupied bonus room unit and it has been just as good to control remotely as the Ecobees. Not as many features as the Ecobee but doesn't sound like you are looking for them.

One of those doorbells where I can see who is at the door on my phone when they ring it.

Honeywell

This is the one I've been looking at the most.

Can you give me some examples of the features that are missing? I'm not sure what features I want and dont want.

I have a ton of experience with the video doorbells, are you replacing an existing doorbell ?

No existing doorbell. The one I used to have was just a battery run wireless one.

I have the $100 Honeywell wifi thermostat and the $250 Ecobee3. The honeywell does everything I need it to do for my downstairs unit. I recommend it.

The ecobee has more bells and whistles but the reason I have it in my bonus room is the remote sensor. My thermostat is located on the knee/outside wall which gives an inaccurate temp. The remote sensor transmits the accurate room temp from the middle of the room. I recommend it also.

I've got two Honeywell WiFi thermostats. It is one of their more "premium" models. Cost is somewhere just short of $200.

I use the app all the time to control the temperature for both units at my house when I am away or too lazy to get up from my chair.

If you don't plan on running wires buy the original Ring Doorbell and a chime module. (Not the pro)

The Pro gives you the ability to view live stream video at any time you want. The original only allows you to view live stream video after the doorbell has been pressed.

It's frustrating when you get a motion sensor alert at night but can't see what it is because it was just a bird or squirrel hanging out by your front door.. The pro allows you to do so.

There is a firmware update that allows you to peek in live whenever you want on the original version. The pro requires an existing doorbell, but does have a sleeker design, 1080P video, and better motion sensor masking.

all the video doorbells suck. they frick you with monthly subscription services and disable key features if you opt-out of paying that.

no matter what tigerwise says, they all have technical issues..just hit the /homeautomation subred and read up on the problems.

i'd wait on this if i were you because surely better products are on the horizon.

as for the thermostat, you're welcome:

$60 gets you a unit built like a tank

i've installed probably a dozen of these for friends and family and they've been flawless. no fancy colored LED screens with dancing suns but if you just want it to work and work well, look no further.

i also have like a 30 page thread on this on here somewhere if you have installation questions.

No monthly fees unless you want cloud storage and that's $30 buck a year.

Most of the problems come from lack of wifi at the door. I've seen hundreds of these go in the field. It's freaking $200 bucks, good value IMO.

Maybe I should send you one so you can start a Ring Doorbell appreciation thread.

Ring Pros work great if you have wires you can use for it. Subscription is only if you want it to save videos. Would be nice to have but not a product killer if you opt out.

Worth $200 refurbished on Amazon.
