Best HD projector for the money?

What's the best deal i can get on an HD projector? I know absolutely nothing about them.

What are you going to be projecting onto?
How far away from the projection surface is the projector going to be?
What screen size and resolution are you looking for?
Does it need to perform in a bright room, or a dark room?

all of this, I'm the IT guy at a college and work with projectors all day, please let me know the answer to all of these...
The most important question here is - how far is the projector going to be from the screen, and how big is the screen

That's the screen I'm looking to get based on suggestions and reviews. I guess the distance will depend on recommendations and projector? It doesn't have to meet any distance parameters.
It will go both indoors in a gymnasium and outdoors at night.

epson 8350 is a very good all around projector.
