Bought my wife a Dell PC laptop for Christmas. She has an uncanny ability to destroy electronics.
What antivirus are you running on your PC? What free one would you recommend? Thx.

Spend the money.
Buy Kaspersky.
It's consistently rated as the best year in and year out.

I'll second Kaspersky. That what our IT guys at work recommend.

If on Windows 10 just run Windows Defender. No need to waste any money on anything else.

Enable Windows Defender on Windows 10
Have her use only Chrome and put AdBlock on it.
at this point, she would have to seriously need to go out of her way to get a virus or adware.
I wouldn't spend money on a software.

I would have to agree with MapGuy. Also make sure you make Chrome her default browser. If not stupid arse Win10 will still use EDGE.
Click on the Windows Icon / Start button.
Click on settings
Click on System
Click on Default Apps
Scroll down until you see Web Browser.
Left click on it and choose Chrome.

This is solid advice.
Use Windows Defender.
Use an adblocker.

I do all of this plus Kaspersky.
I visit many questionable web sites looking for things that I like to watch. Kaspersky has certainly helped whereas Windows Defender would have missed it.

I've used the pay version of Avast for years and haven't had a problem.
I've only dealt with Kaspersky on the enterprise level (one of my jobs is to manage our A/V system). Their business support is great but finding info on their site is like Plinko on The Price Is Right: what you want is there it's just a bitch trying to find the right path to it.

I use the free version of Avast, and also use OpenDNS as my DNS server. It has blocked some sites from loading that may have caused me some problems. I'm working on setting up a pi-hole to block ads.

What, no pics?
Make yourself the administrator of her laptop and create a user account for her.

I torrent everyday on nothing but Windows Defender and have not come across one virus.
Also, when you turned on Kaspersky Windows Defender probably turned itself off.

This is what I do. It's worked fine for years (Windows 7 had Defender too).

I haven't had a virus on a computer since like 1998. What the hell are you guys doing on them.

youll have to pay for something that works consistently. One person mentioned Kaspersky, it's a good product but not consistently rated number one, no AV suite is. I'm a believer in consumer reports for judging items because they are not influenced by advertising dollars. They recommend 5 Security Suites in this order.
Bullguard
G Data
Zone Alarm
ESET
Kaspersky
Any one of those should be more than sufficient. G Data is a recommended Best Buy, meaning it's considerably cheaper than the average. G Data and Zone Alarm are only fair at anti phishing, only Kaspersky is excellent in that regard but Kaspersky's firewall protection is only rated as fair, all the others are good or better.
Personally, I use ESET, at the time I bought it, it was the top rated product (as I said, changes frequently). It is an expensive solution for a single computer but not so much for multiples like I have. It works very well, but I suspect any of the listed will.
These are security suites as opposed to strictly AVs, which I would recommend

IE11 is also on Windows10 but you have to find it and put a shortcut on the desktop.
(not that i'm recommending it, but just an FYI since we have to test that configuration for my job)
