Avast Anti-Virus Shady Billing Practices

3 Years ago I paid for a 12 month Avast subscription. At the end of the subscription I decided not to renew. Avast automatically charged a renewal to my credit card but I called and cancelled the renewal. All good. I also went into my account on their website and unchecked the auto-renewal option. I do still use the free version on my computer. This year they charged the renewal again. However, I was issued a new Credit Card number last month due to fraudulent activity on my card. I never updated this new card number with Avast but they miraculously were able to use this new card number to again charge a renewal. My belief is Avast is taking my Credit Card number as I enter it on other web sites such as Amazon and using this stolen info. Anyone else have a more reasonable explanation?

There is pretty much zero chance that Avast stole your new number. More likely is your old card number wasn't truly canceled (and was instead just expired or marked as such), and I believe some banks or credit card companies sometimes honor charges to old numbers (which get "forwarded" to the new number) when a customer is issued a new card number.
Maybe call your card company and see if they honor charges to your old number, even if it is canceled.

I had other recurring charges set up on that card. All of those companies alerted me that my payment was denied.

Well, I don't know what to tell you other than I'm nearly 100% certain that Avast is not logging your keystrokes and stealing card numbers. That's the kind of thing their software protects against.

I've had Stubhub update my card number after a new card was issued for the same reason. I don't think it's Avast being shady as far as the card number goes. They may have been shady as far as auto-renewing when you have told them not to.

Yeah the shady part is I think when you initially subscribe, there's some fine print that says you're agreeing to multiple renewals regardless of whether you check the "auto-renew" box.

I've had charges added to my new card after losing my original card without changing it with them

Ok. Sounds like I over reacted. I still don't understand how the charge went through if they didn't have my new CC #. My CC Company emailed me asking if it was a fraudulent charge ....well....there were 7 or 8 transactions and that was one. I answered yes. Got a new card today.
