This is huge news in our industry. This isn't time warner cable, they were bought by charter last year. This is big boy Time Warner

My guess is the will control the content and run it exclusive for online platforms and directv and Uverse.

AT&T (NYSE:T) has a deal in principle to buy Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) for $85B, a 16%-plus premium above today's closing market cap, Reuters is reporting.

That blockbuster could come with full details as soon as Sunday, as Reuters was reporting earlier.

Following on AT&T's $48B acquisition of DirecTV last year, adding Time Warner would make AT&T a central media player, with control not only of its wide distribution network in satellite and wireless but some of media's most coveted assets: the Warner Bros. film studio, live sports-friendly Turner Broadcasting networks, CNN, and most especially HBO.

They should just call themselves Bell System. No reason to hide it

That's what I was thinking. They've just been gunning for the government to come break them up again for the last decade.

Didn't the feds tell them they couldn't buy TMobile? Why do they think this will fly?

After buying DirecTV...why? What's the point?

They'd own the distribution network, the distribution systems, the distribution services and the actual distribution content.

Exactly

This is huge. Every year media companies negotiate deals with people like Att. Now they would own the content

Awww, AT&T would never, ever leverage HBO to sweeten their bundles. It would never even occur to 'em.

I don't think they'll have a problem getting this passed. There's precedent with NBC Universal / Comcast a few years ago.

That came with the stipulation that they could only be a silent partner when it came to Hulu. I wonder if HBO and Turner Sports would get similar hands off stipulations. It'd be a shame if AT&T tried to turn back the clock and restrict streaming access to those. Hopefully the genie's already out of the bottle with HBO Now.

I wont say too much, but ive been in meetings on many of these discussions. been in the industry for 15 years and know a lot of the execs at these companies.

the plan isnt to restrict other companies to use the content. the FCC would never allow that.

the goal is to own the content, therefore when DISH/Charter/Suddenlink, etc buy the rights to air the content, AT&T would then make money off of that.

This happens all the time in the wireless industry. its like you living in Louisiana and having cellular one or a smaller wireless company as your carrier. they down own those lines for your cell signal. they are paying AT&T or Verizon to lease those lines so you are getting the same signal as an AT&T or Verizon customer, its just that your bill says Company X.

Our industry is about to see a lot of consolidation. DISH will be sold in the next 12-24 months IMO. they are cutting jobs left and right and losing their arse as a single play provider.

the future is streaming and a la cart, and AT&T realizes that and is trying to get ahead.

If and when this happens, I'll most likely cut the cord for a TV provider and simply rely on Netflix, Hulu and Roku / Fire TV content. I'll use my MIL password for WatchESPN and be set.
