So I go into the AT&T store to upgrade to a 5 and the salesman says they no longer do that. He starts going on the pitch about paying for the phone in monthly installments. I decided I didn't need a new phone that badly.

I get home and go on AT&T's website and do the upgrade just fine. So I don't know what was going on at that store. I'm wondering to myself- "why the hell would anyone pay full price for a cell phone?" Like, why would someone pay more for cell service without getting free or discounted phones?

Which brings me to Straight Talk. I'm paying $270 a month for four iPhones with AT&T. I've been pondering for a while jumping ship and going to Wal Mart and paying $45 a month for each phone. Anyone else done this? I can't keep AT&T for much longer. They cost way too much.

If you wanted to switch from AT&T, why would you upgrade and lock in to amother 2 year contract?

Well, my wife did also. But yesterday we went in there and they claimed they no longer did that.

I'm trying to decide where to go. My AT&T contract is up in July, and I'm paying $150 for two, one unlimited and one 3Gb. I don't use a ton of data since I'm on wireless most of the time, and my wife doesn't come close to 3Gb.
Considering options. I could probably switch to Straight Talk or Cricket or one of those, as long as I can keep upgrading my phone as I wish by buying them outright.

I don't know if they still have it but I have 2 unlimited 4GLTE lines for $50/each at TMobile. Total bill about $108
Addt'l lines are $40

If you live in a larger metro area, TMobile is legit and you get great service. I wouldn't get it if you are in a densely populated area (tmobile doesn't waste capex money on small towns)

You pay for the phone regardless. You think ATT is taking $400 losses on every new phone they sell?

Look into T-Mobile. My wife and I once had them but wanted the new iphones so we went back to AT&T. I pay an extra 20-40$ a month because of that decision.

I can tell you that T-Mobile is JUST AS good as AT&T in New Orleans. I'm a little weary of those small cats companies that sound too good to be true. Seems like those people don't have cell service when they need it the most (car wrecks, car trouble, emergencies, etc).

at anyone that honestly thinks they are "getting over" on AT&T or they are controlling them. They are getting their money regardless just as any other carrier is.

Did you read what I wrote, or just notice the words...

ATT told him they don't do upgrades anymore, and he walked out whining to TD..

He should have said "yes you do" and gotten his shite straight...

I upgraded without switching to Next three days ago. Finally got an "honest" att employee after being transferred three times who told me since the wife and I use about 12.5GB of data a month I would have to pay an extra $30 a month for the 15GB plan which would offset the $25 discount by switching to Next. He said the stores won't do it anymore and it takes a herculean effort to do it by me calling in like I did. Said the easiest way to upgrade keeping the unlimited plan is just to do it online yourself if you want to keep your unlimited data plan.

Walked into Target with an unlimited plan a few weeks back...

Walked out with a 5s for .01

Same unlimited data plan for two more years

I don't like it, but my wife needed a new iPhone and she takes advantage of the unlimited data

I use straight talk and have service anywhere a regular ATT customer would have service, which is basically everywhere.

If you are using a MVNO that uses Sprint's towers or something then youll have plenty of dead spots.

Because you aren't getting a free or discounted phone. You are still paying for the phone. In fact, you are probably paying more than full price for it.

you basically have 3 options with at&t.

1) buy the phone outright from them or another source and get a discount on your plan. My plan is discounted $25/month b/c I'm not on a contract.

2) buy a phone on contract (upgrade), but you don't receive the $25/month discount. 2 year plan with the extra $25/month = $600 PLUS the cost of the "upgrade". So someone paying $299 for a new iPhone 6+ and signing a 2 year contract is basically paying $900 for their phone over those 2 years instead of the $749 list price.

3) AT&T (Next) is upfront about the full price of the phone. You pay installments on it and they allow trade-ins for those that want new phones often. You don't have a contract, but you have to payoff the phone if you cancel service... which is basically a contract. You also get the $25/month discount like option 1 on the mobile share plans.

Personally, I wouldn't do option 3 b/c there are great, bloat-free phones that are available from other sources than AT&T. In my opinion option 2 is a complete ripoff. I understand that some people are clinging on to their unlimited data plans, but my wife and I share 10gb of data and never go over 5-6gb even when we travel.

The only problem with MVNO's is customer service.

I switched from AT&T to straight Talk bc I couldn't get service in very many places. I pay 51.80 a month for ST; my service uses Verizon towers and I get far better cell service than I did with AT&T.

I had Straightalk for about a year. It was fine. No 4g if I remember correctly and their unlimited data would be throttled around 2gb. I switched back to AT&T once they offered the data share plans. My wife and I split 10gb with unlimited talk & text plus rollover data for $120/month. I think I have a corporate discount still on my account that gives me another $15 off a month so maybe it should be about $135/month. Either way, it really isn't a bad plan. My problem with AT&T is the service. It isn't nearly as good as verizon. With Verizon I had perfect service and extremely fast data speeds. However, they have a dead spot at my new house so I can't have it.
