AT&T is raising upgrade/activation fee for NEXT, BYOD, & 2-yr contract customers

AT&T invents an absurd $15 activation fee for Next customers
quote:
AT&T will soon increase its activation fees for customers on regular postpaid contracts and those new to the carrier's Next upgrade plan. Droid Life first reported the pending hikes, which will raise the activation fee for one- and two-year contracts to $45 — up from the current $40 — starting August 1st. $5 isn't a ton of money, but this is still the type of move that frustrates consumers and makes AT&T look awfully greedy. That $45 figure is now the highest activation fee among all US mobile providers. AT&T increased it from $35 to $40 last June, a move that Verizon Wireless later followed.
But the worst change affects customers who sign up for AT&T's Next plan on or after August 1st. Like other carriers, AT&T's upgrade-when-you-want installment plan has allowed consumers to get started with $0 down and no hidden activation, financing, or upgrade fees. Unfortunately, that won't be the case much longer. Starting on the 1st, AT&T will charge all new Next customers a $15 activation fee whenever they get a new phone. That same $15 rate applies if you bring your own smartphone compatible with AT&T's network and start a new, contract-free line of service with the carrier.

I wish consumers would flex a little muscle but instead take this shite laying down. It's a bullshite fee and they shouldn't be allowed to charge it. If people started leaving Verizon and ATT in droves, they'd change their tune quickly. It's greed plain and simple.

This may finally be the thing that makes me move to an independent carrier like Republic or Ting.

The picture says sprint and T-Mobile already charge similar fees, is this really a big deal?If people are so unhappy with the big providers, why aren't they jumping over to all the imdependent providers?

I'm just waiting on my Project Fi invite

T-mobile requires the $15 when you first start. They don't charge it when upgrading because you use the same sim card.
Unless it's a new change or they just forgot to charge me both times, but I've upgraded twice while being on their plan and was only charged when first switching over to them.

You don't like free markets?

They gotta have the money for their soon to be purchase of DirecTV. The sale should be approved any day now by the FCC.

How do they charge activation on BYOD phones? I just took my sim out of my Nexus 5 and put it in my Alcatel Idol 3 without telling ATT anything and it works fine.

If your service is that bad with AT&T then just imagine how bad it would be with a smaller carrier with less coverage.

I don't see how there could be less.

Switch to TMobile or Sprint then.
I am just speaking for where I am but AT&T has the best coverage. A few guys that work for me have Boost/Sprint and they can't use their phones in half the areas I can use mine.

I would imagine it applies to someone starting a new account with AT&T and they already have a device.

I think all this will do is give Amazon more business. People will just buy their phone and switch sim cards when they upgrade

If people are willing to live with many dropped calls and spotty to zero internet at best in all but the major cities then I don't see why they don't do this.
It's obvious to me that the vast majority of people are willing to pay a pretty good penny for the coverage that they require that pretty much only ATT and Verizon come close to.

For as bad as Sprint has been in the past, it is significantly better today.
Never had an issue with voice calls - it was always the data. Recent tower upgrades have helped tremendously.
