Are WiFi routers universal these days?

Yes, and I can't remember a time when they weren't.

While all wireless routers are universal, keep in mind that some work better than others.

There was the whole A and B issue back in the day. Now everything is backwards compatible. The only issue now is 2.4ghz vs 5ghz.

But there isn't a brand specific wifi router that only works with that same brand card.
