Ha, yea Apple feels very antiquated to me for about the last 5-8 years. Microsoft was getting pummelled by apple over the last 10 years or so but they've started innovating again and we've gotten the Surface Book, Surface Pro X tablets and such. Amazon and Microsoft seem to be innovating and Apple seems to be clinging on to 10 years ago and now charged 5,000$ for the insanely rich.

Almost seems like a status symbol than a great product.

Seems like most of the time they spent catching up to the rest of the industry

That's largely Apple's business model. They take products in niche markets which they simplify and/or improve the industrial design and make the market mainstream. Regarding the HomePod, integration and developer support is going to be the key. I can't control my Fire TV with my Echo Dot which I think is ridiculous. If HomePod Siri can control Apple TV and Apple TV apps, it may not be enough to make me switch, but if I was just entering this space it'd be a pretty compelling reason to sway me Apple's way.

I don't think Apple is making much off of it now, but if this catches on at all they'd be crazy to not make iMessage cross platform. The potential gain is bigger than the iPhone lock in.

How was this not already a thing several years ago?

That's how it's going to be for awhile. AR is probably the next big thing but you really need something like glasses for that to work but people don't want to wear glasses. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple turned the Apple Watch into a legit medical device before AR gets cracked.

Apple has been "meh" since shortly after Steve Jobs died. (I'd imagine they still had some of his ideas in the pipeline.)

Jobs was a gigantic a-hole but he was very creative. Tim Cook is not.

These companies need to realize that innovation is what keeps you at the top.

Microsoft and Apple replaced visionaries (Jobs and Gates) with maintain the status quo business guys(Ballmer and Cook).

MS is finally starting to come out of their funk under Nadella but I think that the stagnant period for Apple has just started.

I think they realize that, but there are only so many visionaries around and you don't tell the visionary what to do, you let him tell you what to do, so you have to be very careful in picking someone to make sure they'll take you where you want to go.

I think Apple should look at buying Tesla. Most of what they sell uses batteries, so having your own battery manufacturing and design would be beneficial. They have car ambitions and hired a bunch of Tesla people to work on that. And they like to think of themselves as environmentalists and Tesla also sells solar panels. But Tim Cook would need to accept a demotion or leave, and making him leave would be a hard decision to make because Apple's real core strength isn't their past innovation but their supply chain management that Cook has built. He's a big part of the reason they make so much more money on phones than other manufacturers so you'd hate to lose him.
