The original patents were pretty damn vague to begin with (“a system and method causes a computer to detect and perform actions on structures identified in computer data”)

yes our patent system is a joke and the government is too scared to do anything about it b/c the businesspersons are wasy smarter than the bureaucrats and the government is scared that it will look foolish

This is really a case study on how horribly slow our system is.

Yet they will be available on eBay all day long.

They will get a penalty award and block Samsung's use of that patent without paying to license it. Not exactly a waste of time to protect the patents you own even if they are dumb ones.

Also a case study on how you can game the system. Samsung's entire business model is

1- Steal idea
2- Repackage idea with a Samsung Logo
3- Prolong lawsuit
4- Innovate fast enough to have updated models become "your own"

By the time someone wins a lawsuit against them, they've already gained market share and products that get banned are irrelevant
