What sports can you get on chrome cast?

Chromecast compatible sports apps. Note, in case it isn't clear- buying a ChromeCast doesn't buy you a subscription to any of these. It buys you a way to access the subscription you already own. Said another way: If you have no subscription to any of these means that it will not get you any sports.

Hmmm.

Apple TV.

Last night I was on my MacBook photoshopping an extended family picture taken earlier in the day. I mirrored to my Apple TV while my wife and daughter watched me do it. My mom called me in the middle of it and I answered her call on my MacBook and the call also mirrored and was playing through the TV sound bar. My mom was talking to me, my wife and my daughter through the TV mirrored from my MacBook while I sent the finished picture out.

Apple TV is pretty great.

I use the chromecast to watch streams people put on the internet. It's hooked up to my pc I don't actually use chromecast apps just its ability to mirror my computer screen.

If you're gonna do that getting some kind of ad-blocker is a must.

You cannot play Amazon Instant Video on an AppleTV with the remote, though. AirPlay from a mobile device is required.
Gotcha. Didn't realize that was the point you were making.

In short, there's nothing simpler about it vs the Roku. As far as "functionality" is concerned, the AppleTV supports Device Mirroring and iTunes Home Sharing. Their hardware is about a push with a slight lean to Roku. AirPlay vs Play on Roku are also roughy a push, with a slight edge to AirPlay. The youtube App itself, from a remote, is far better on the AppleTV. When used with AirPlay/play on Roku, it's virtually indistinguishable. Past that, it's really not any more simple or beneficial to own an AppleTV.
I guess by "simplicity" I was thinking of it being the only thing you need. Like I said, I agree that Roku is great and simple. I have one of those as well.

I do agree with just about everything you are saying though. But I would still recommend ATV over Roku in that one instance where someone is already deep in apple (itunes over plex, etc.).

The one issue is of course Amazon IV.

I've got a Chromecast and Apple TV and use Chromecast more it seems like. I have a Macbook Pro, Ipad and an Android phone. The Chromecast does pretty much everything the Apple TV does including mirroring the Macbook Pro (using Chrome). Haven't tried Roku but hear great things about it too. Just depends what you want and how much $$ you're willing to spend and the exosystem you're in.

If you have different ecosystems and don't care about a remote - Chromecast
If you have different ecosystems and want a remote - Roku or Fire TV (Haven't played with Fire TV either)
If you have all apple products and don't mind the price - Apple TV

I would not recommend getting the apple tv right now as it is way over due for an update.

Is there something, hardware wise, that it's missing that would make it so much more valuable than the current version?

not right now. But when the new one comes out I bet it has a major software overall to take advantage of newer hardware.

I guess that was my point. My current AppleTV will get the software update (I would hope). And these aren't chip intensive devices. Most of the performance depends on the internet connection you are using. I'm not saying that hardware isn't important or wouldn't be an improvement. I just don't think that should hold anyone back from buying an ATV

Well, I have a 2nd and 3rd gen Apple TV. My 2nd gen did not get the last major update and my 3rd gen, since it was an early model 3rd gen and did not have the die shrunk A5 that they use now didn't get some of the new features. So I wouldn't bet on definitely getting the software update.
