I take what he said as what he meant.
Does context mean nothing?

That his iPaq could do everything single thing that an iPhone today can do.
Actually, he said "all the same shite" as you quoted, not "every[sic] single thing". His iPaq had a color touchscreen, was a media player, and had productivity and communication apps, among many others. That qualifies as "all the same shite" to me, just like I would say that a truck from 2001 can do all the same shite as a truck from today, even though it didn't have a nav unit and couldn't play mp3's or whatever. The older truck can haul shite, too. Are truck manufacturers of today particularly innovative for putting now-existing tech in their trucks? I wouldn't say so, they are just marching along with technology that people around the world are developing.

Why are you sticking up for this guy anyway?
I'm not sticking up for him in particular, I'm just supporting the point. Apple is praised as being an incredibly innovative company, but they are only innovative in the loosest definition of the word. Praise them for their success all you want. There is no denying they are successful. But their innovative efforts are focused on refinement and marketing, as Dijkstra said. If you want to consider "refinement" as being innovative by the strict definition of the word, fine. But by that definition ANYTHING IN THE WORLD is innovative. So take a step back and see that there is not much truly novel about nearly everything Apple does, and that there are several tiers of innovation.

I'm pretty sure that mobile safari was the first mobile HTIML browser. I could be wrong though. Either way, his iPaq did not have an HTML browser, WAP maybe.
Opera Mobile was released for PDAs in 2000. It was an HTML browser that didn't add support for WAP until 2003. It had Javascript support by 2005.

Apple's biggest innovation of the past 10 years was pricing structure with the iPhone. Keeping the year old model (and two year old model) around at $100 less than it was the previous year.

I’m just going to say it.

CarPlay is the Moto ROKR and the Apple Car is the iPhone.
