Unless you have specialized requirements (and you'll know if you do) then your phone should be just fine.

For example, sometimes I take backpacking trips where I won't be able to charge anything for several days, so I carry a lightweight Canon Powershot with enough batteries to last me.

If you feel your phone isn't enough, get a superzoom. Most point and shoots aren't going to give you much more than most of today's phones can, but the superzoom have superzoom as the name implies, and they often have decent wide angles and some models are practically the same size as the old point and shoots.

I got a refurbished from Canon and love it. It was about $265 and comes with same warranty as new ones. Here is the website:

It's a PowerShot SX50 and got an extra % off when they were having a sale on refurbished LINK

Used it last month on vacation. Takes great pics, but it is too big to slip in a pocket. I use a smaller Canon point and shoot when I need a smaller one.

Ditto on canon. S110 or s120 on sale if you can find it. Both awesome

You'll be wasting time, money, and will hate lugging it around if you get a DSLR just for vacation shots. If you really want something more than your phone camera look into a Panasonic Lumix. LINK

This particular one is the previous model, but for only $330 its one of the best point and shoot cameras you can get. It has pretty much all of the fixings of a DSLR if you care to learn how to use them (except megapixels and lenses of course), yet its small enough to fit in your pocket.

It's made very well, solid and heavy, not like other cheap plastic point and shoots. Really a great camera that even professional photographers can't scoff at.
