I've seen prices range anywhere from $799.99 to $1,499.99 and I'm wondering what the board's thoughts are on the subject.

I'm looking for maybe a Samsung/Vizio/LG/Sharp/etc. 60" 4K Ultra HD Smart TV and am being bogged down by the paradox of choice.

Please can someone share the best "bang for the buck" television in the market today that's ~$1,000.

TIA.

Not much available that is worth the money at that price point, can't get a good Samsung or the Vizio P series in that size for that price.

Just wait until the fall when prices are lower and catch a good sale around Holiday time.

Otherwise drop down to a 55" Vizio P series for around $1100 and look to go larger a few years down the road.

I've seen some at Sam's/BJ's/Costco such as this:

Samsung

Not worth it?

Not really, no 10 bit display makes the HDR feature pretty useless, and the 60Hz native motion rate is a pretty big killer too. Those cheap 4K tv's just aren't worth it, especially if you're already going up to 1K.

I certainly can't recommend it unless you just absolutely have to get a TV right now and can't wait.

Comes down to this simple question for you:

Do you want a cheap TV now at that price point that in a years time will be a well below average TV, or do you find it worth it to wait until fall sales and get a great TV that will be good for many years?

As for that TV specifically, no. The Samsung JS7000 from 2015 is around that same price point and at least has a quantum dot display with HDR. That's your bes

COnsumer reports rates this one as the best bang for the buck in the 4K world. 999 on Amazon

LG 55UH6550

only 120 refresh rate though.

This one may be decent, $100 more

LG with 240 refresh rate at Best Buy

One of CR's top 5 at Best Buy for $1399

Nope, that TV completely lacks HDR altogether as well as the 10 bit color panel. No go, especially for that much $.

This is the Samsung I was talking about with 10 bit panel and HDR. LINK

You should probably just start an official HDR TV thread.

Any of the "KS" line of Samsung tvs is a good bet. They won't be very close to $1,000 in the 60" sizes though.

Are you a cord cutter? I ask because THE main reason I haven't upgraded to a 4k TV yet is because if I did stream movies/shows in 4k, I'd blow through my data cap so quickly it'd negate my savings in cord cutting.

I'd say the vizio p series 60" but they discontinued it almost immediately for some reason which I'm really pissed about. I think I'm going to end up with the 55 for 1199 but would prefer to go 60.

How do you feel about that Vizio P 65" for 1999? I really like vizio and have a 55 M series from 2013 that I've really liked. I've heard the new Ps are excellent, but if I'm gonna bite he bullet and spend 2k...do I want that Vizio?

No, the KS8000 is a better panel and you can find them for the same price on a regular basis. It's a better all around TV with by far the best in class upscaling engine, top of the line HDR, and peak brightness. Tizen is great, quick, and responsive too. The Samsungs also have the best app support and the most apps available as well which is really key right now when talking about 4K content.

This CNET reviewseems to like the Vizio/Sony more than the Samsung. Looks like the 60" KS8000 is only about $100 less than the 65" P.

quote:

The KS8000 series reviewed here is currently Samsung's least-expensive SUHD TV for 2016, promising improved picture quality over the company's cheaper 4K TVs. In our tests its image was impressive in some ways, but not up to the overall level of some competitors from Sony and Vizio. The S doesn't mean "superior" picture quality, at least with this TV.

CNet sucks. Use rtings.com for televisions and 4K.com

Sony has the worst picture quality among high end 4K sets besides the awful LG sets. So there goes any CNet credibility they had left in 2016.

Vizio and Samsung are aways ahead.

quote:

The Vizio P is a little bit better for watching movies in a dark room and playing video games. In a living room with ambient lighting however, the Vizio P has more reflection and not an as good picture. Lower quality content like TV channels are also better on the Samsung. As a whole, the KS8000 is a more versatile TV

quote:

As a whole, the Sony X930D picture quality isn’t superior but its price is. Only get it if you absolutely want 3D which is not available on the Samsung KS8000. The Samsung KS8000 offers a better picture quality both in a very bright or very dark room.

quote:

The Samsung KS8000 is the best buy for a TV in this price range if you want to use it for multiple usage. Not a lot of other TVs can compete with its high picture quality, number of features and asking price.

Vizio suffers from a poor UHD upscaler, whereas Samsung has the best in the business by a wide margin. So if you have/watch 720p/1080p content a lot, that upscaler makes a large difference and is probably the single most important feature of a 4K set. Also, the Vizio P series still does not have HDR10, Vizio promised months ago they were patching it in in a software update but have delayed that multiple times, sketchy customer service there IMO.
If you go to rtings and open both up and compare the individual ratings for all of the features, you'll see the Samsung is decently ahead of the still solid P series.

There's a reason the Samsungs are a bit more expensive than the Vizios, and it's not just the name, Samsung simply offers more features, and of the features they share, Samsung is simply better at them.

You can routinely find the 65" KS8000 for $1999, memorial day sale they were $1997 at every major retailer and Best Buy even had a few open box for $1800 which is a ridiculous steal.

Only downside to that choice (I own a 2016 65" P-Series, BTW, ) is that it is IPS.

Overall, they're fantastic displays (no tuners, so they're not technically television sets). And this one might be right for the OP, if the viewing angles are going to be significantly off-center. But that's the oddity about that display in the line.
