Airbus has been talking about its Vahana flying autonomous vehicle project for a while now, but at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, it’s showing off a concept design created in partnership with Italdesign. The demonstration vehicle offers modular functionality, meaning it an operate both on the ground and in the air, and Airbus thinks it’s one potential answer to the growing problem of urban traffic congestion.

I've never thought flying cars would become a thing because we are barely functional driving in just 2 dimensions, I'd hate to see us in 3. But with computers flying/driving and the modular design letting you only pay for the speed of flight when you need it, the prospect of flying cars seems a lot more realistic.

The #1 reason this will never happen is there won't be any demand.

Think about it. 85% of your time in the car is spent within a 5 - 10 mile radius. I'm not going to buy something that flys just to hop down to the grocery store.

I'd buy it to avoid driving 38 miles to work each way

Which is what makes the modular design so interesting. Don't think of it as buying a $150k flying car. Think of it as paying $XX per incident to have a big drone fly your car across town when you really need to be somewhere in a hurry.

But when flying there are 4 ways you can go to avoid collisions. Driving you really only have 2. Plus it would be awesome to take off from my yard and land on the roof at work.

I can only imagine what elementary schools would look like with parents hovering at pickup time.
