Eastern Conference

Atlanta United FC
Nickname: None
Colors: Victory Red, Black, & Gold
Kit Sponsor: American Family Insurance
Ground: Mercedes-Benz Stadium (40,000), turf

Owner: Arthur Blank (USA)
Executive: President Darren Eales (ENG), Director Carlos Bocanegra (USA)
Manager: Tata Martino (ARG)

MLS Cups Won: 0
Supporters Shields Won: 0
US Open Cups Won: 0
2016 Record: None

Farewells: Nobody
Greetings: Everybody

Outlook: From their $1.6B Mercedes-Benz Stadium, to their $60M training ground, to their hiring of Argentinian Tata Martino and former USMNT captain Carlos Bocanegra, to their 30K season ticket holders, to their signing of talented young South American internationals, Atlanta United have made a cannonball splash thus far off pitch. Now comes the time for performance on pitch. Atlanta is rich in young talent options. Brad Guzan will be a leader from the back end; veteran backup keeper Alec Kann will fill in until Guzan’s arrival. The backline will consist of Greg Garza, Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, Michael Parkhurst, and Tyrone Mears and offers a good combination of youth and experience. Parkhurst and Mears have been inconsistent in defense but their veteran MLS experience should play a healthy factor. Chilean Carlos Carmona will be the defensive midfield stopgap while Irish international Chris McCann and MLS veteran Jeff Larentowicz offer midfield support. This team should be exciting and dynamic in attack with Miguel Almiron, Hector Villalba, Josef Martinez, and Yamil Assad offering technical skill, creativity, and finishing abilities. Kenwyne Jones is a physical F who should draw marking mismatches while opening up space for Atlanta’s attackers to strike and create chances. Atlanta’s three DPs are all young, talented, skillful South American attackers that should blossom under Martino and give opposing defenses a considerable challenge. D Miles Robinson, F Brandon Vazquez, M Julian Gressel, and M Andrew Carleton are all promising youthful players. M Harrison Heath, D Mark Bloom, D Mikey Ambrose, D Zach Loyd, and F Jacob Peterson offer quality depth. The key questions are how quickly and how well the squad gels together to create the requisite chemistry for a finished product and how this young team handles inevitable adversity.

Chicago Fire SC
Nickname: Fire, Men In Red
Colors: Red & White
Kit Sponsor: Valspar
Ground: Toyota Park (20,000), grass

Owner: Andrew Hauptman (USA)
Executive: GM Nelson Rodriguez (USA)
Manager: Veljko Paunovic (SRB)

MLS Cups Won: 1 (1998)
Supporters Shields Won: 1 (2003)
US Open Cups Won: 4 (1998, 2000, 2003, 2006)
2016 Record: 7-17-10, last place Eastern, last place overall

Farewells: GK Sean Johnson (to NYC)
Greetings: M Dax McCarty (from NY), F Nemanja Nikolic (from Legia Warsaw), M Juninho (from Tijuana), GK Jorge Rodrigo Bava (from Atletico Bucaramanga), M Daniel Johnson (from Louisville)

Outlook: A rough few years for Chicago culminated in a bottoming out last season: dead last in the league. Better results and improvement is expected under second year manager Veljkp Paunovic, who led Serbia’s U20 team to the World Cup championship in 2015 and compiled a high reputation managing Serbia’s youth teams for several years. Jorge Bava will take over in net for departed Sean Johnson. Backline will probably consist of youthful but promising Brandon Vincent, second year pro Jonathan Campbell, Dutch veteran Johan Kappelhof, and MLS journeyman Michael Harrington. Dax McCarty and Juninho were brought in to try and fill the black hole the team had in central midfield. McCarty will be tasked with playing more forward and taking on a larger role in driving the attack, which will tend to flow through wingers David Accam and Arturo Alvarez. The Fire have finally realized that Accam is not really a goal scorer so Dutchman Michael De Leeuw and newly acquired DP Nemanja Nikolic (40 goals in 56 apps for Warsaw) will be tasked with finishing chances. M Matt Polster, M John Goossens, D Joao Meira will also play significant roles. The Fire are a work in progress but steps have been taken for the better and a lack of significant improvement on the pitch will be viewed as a great disappointment.

Columbus Crew SC
Nickname: Crew, Black and Gold
Colors: Black & Gold
Kit Sponsor: Acura
Ground: Mapfre Stadium (20,145), grass

Owner: Anthony Precourt (USA)
Executive: Director Gregg Berhalter (USA), Director Asher Mendelsohn (USA)
Manager: Gregg Berhalter (USA)

MLS Cups Won: 1 (2008)
Supporters Shields Won: 3 (2004, 2008, 2009)
US Open Cups Won: 1 (2002)
2016 Record: 8-14-12, 9th place Eastern, 18th place overall

Farewells: GK Steve Clark (to AC Horsens), D Michael Parkhurst (to ATL), M Mohammed Saeid (to MIN)
Greetings: D Jonathan Mensah (from Anzhi Makhachkala), D Jukka Raitala (from Sogndal), M Mohammad Abu (from Stromsgodset), M Artur (from Sao Paulo), D Lalas Abubakar (from Dayton), F Niko Hansen (from New Mexico)

Outlook: Columbus looks to get back on track after last season was derailed due to open hostility between the club’s two leading players, Kei Kamara and Federico Higuain. Kamara was sent packing and Higuain spent most of the year injured in a season that was nothing more than an exercise in damage control. The club seems all in with 21 year old GK Zack Steffen, allowing veteran keeper Steve Clark to leave for Denmark without concern. It will be interesting to watch the US youth international and former Freiburg player progress on pitch. Former captain Michael Parkhurst is gone so the backline will be anchored by Ghanaian international and European veteran Jonathan Mensah. Nicolai Naess arrived from Norway toward the end of last season and will probably pair with Mensah. Fullback Waylon Francis missed all of last year with injury; look for him to try to get back in form. Another Ghanaian international, Harrison Afful, returns at RB. Finnish international Jukka Raitala was signed to reinforce the backline and has the versatility to play inside or outside. Tony Tchani will be asked to step up in midfield and compete with Mohammed Abu to fill the role left by Mohammed Saeid alongside #6 Wil Trapp. Higuain returns to drive the offense; how he returns to form at age 32 will be a determining factor in Columbus’ fortunes. Justin Meram and Ethan Finlay will attack down the wings. Finlay and Trapp look to progress further after seemingly hitting a plateau last season amidst the chaos on and off the pitch. Ola Kamara stepped in the wake as the striker last season and produced goals, drawing overtures from Europe that were rebuffed by Columbus. He will be looked at to continue his performance. Depth is an issue.

DC United
Nickname: Black and Red
Colors: Black, White, & Red
Kit Sponsor: Leidos
Ground: RFK Stadium (45,596), grass

Owner: Jason Levien (USA), Erick Thohir (IDN)
Executive: GM Dave Kasper (USA)
Manager: Ben Olsen (USA)

MLS Cups Won: 4 (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004)
Supporters Shields Won: 4 (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007)
US Open Cups Won: 3 (1996, 2008, 2013)
2016 Record: 11-10-13, 4th place Eastern, 10th place overall

Farewells: F Kennedy Igboananike (to Veria), F Alvaro Saborio (retired)
Greetings: F Jose Guillermo Ortiz (from Herediano), M Sebastian Le Toux (from COL), M Ian Harkes (from Wake Forest)

Outlook: DC United has the potential to build on their sporadic success of last year to produce another playoff level squad this season. Patrick Mullins emerged as the go to goal scorer last year and needs to continue that form up top. Little Luciano Acosta will return as the central playmaker. DC spent more money to acquire him from Boca Juniors than they have ever spent for a player and when he is on a hot streak the offense is at another level. MLS veterans Loyd Sam and Patrick Nyarko return as wingers. Marcelo Sarvas, aged 35, will be pushed in midfield by grinder Jared Jeffrey and young Ian Harkes, a box to box MF who won the Hermann Trophy as the top collegiate player last year. The defense is solid with Taylor Kemp, Steve Birnbaum, Sean Franklin, Bobby Boswell, and Nick Deleon on hand for the backline. Bill Hamid has dealt with injury often over the past couple years and just recently underwent knee surgery. When healthy, Hamid has been one of the best in MLS. Travis Worra will fill in for him again when necessary. Newly signed winger Jose Guillermo Ortiz and returnees Lamar Neagle and Chris Rolfe provide additional attacking talent and depth, as will MLS senior statesman Sebastien Le Toux. If Mullins can continue to score, Acosta can create chances with consistency, the defense plays to its capabilities, and another central MF steps up, this team could have a very good year.

Montreal Impact
Nickname: Impact, Blues
Colors: Blue, Black, & Silver
Kit Sponsor: BMO
Ground: Stade Saputo (20,801), grass

Owner: Giuseppe Saputo (CAN)
Executive: Director Adam Braz (CAN)
Manager: Mauro Biello (CAN)

MLS Cups Won: 0
Supporters Shields Won: 0
Canadian Championships Won: 3 (2008, 2013, 2014)
2016 Record: 11-11-12, 5th place Eastern, 11th place overall

Farewells: F Didier Drogba (possibly retired), M Lucas Ontivero (to Universidad de Chile), D Donny Toia (to ORL), M Johan Venegas (to MIN), M Harry Shipp (to SEA)
Greetings: D Chris Duvall (from NY), M Blerim Dzemaili (from Bologna), M Adrian Arregui (from Atletico Temperley), M Shamit Shome (from Edmonton)

Outlook: Some changes in personnel for a club that caught fire to finish strong last year. Matteo Mancosu forced Didier Drogba to the bench and returns as striker. He was one of the leading catalysts of Montreal’s torrid finish. Ignacio Piatti returns as the #10 after completing an MVP caliber season and is one of MLS’ best. Dominic Oduro is streaky and inconsistent yet fast and dangerous. He stretches defenses to create chances for Mancosu and Piatti but is also capable of scoring a goal. Elder statesman Patrice Bernier returns for one last tour in midfield. Marco Donadel and Hernan Bernadello will need to step up for Johan Venegas and Lucas Ontivero, two promising but now departed players. New DP Blerim Dzemaili will arrive from Bologna to help shore up the midfield after completing his season in Serie A. Adrian Arregui, on loan from Argentina, will help provide options in midfield. MLS veteran Chris Duvall was acquired by trade to fill the departure of Donny Toia at RB while Ambroise Oyongo returns to man the opposite side. Blossoming Argentinian Victor Cabrera and Belgian international Laurent Ciman make a very good CB combo while Evan Bush is one of the better keepers in the league. A lack of quality depth is a significant issue. Mauro Biello has deftly handled challenges thus far as manager. He took over a flailing team from a fired Frank Klopas more than halfway through the 2015 season and guided the squad to a winning record and deep playoff run. In his second year, Biello faced down an insubordinate legend in Didier Drogba until the DP accepted his new role as a sub and replaced him with new arrival Mancosu, who helped ignite another deep playoff run. Piatti, Mancosu, and Oduro are fun to watch and Biello has managed well.

New England Revolution
Nickname: Revolution, Revs
Colors: Blue, Red, & White
Kit Sponsor: UnitedHealthcare
Ground: Gillette Stadium (66,829), turf

Owner: Robert Kraft (USA)
Executive: President Brian Bilello (USA), Director Michael Burns (USA)
Manager: Jay Heaps (USA)

MLS Cups Won: 0
Supporters Shields Won: 0
US Open Cups Won: 1 (2007)
2016 Record: 11-14-9, 7th place Eastern, 14th place overall

Farewells: GK Bobby Shuttleworth (to MIN), D Jose Goncalves (unsigned)
Greetings: D Antonio Mlinar Delamea (from Olimpija Ljubljana), D Benjamin Angoua (from EA Guingamp)

Outlook: After three successful years under Jay Heaps, the Revolution crashed last season. Inconsistent offense and defensive lapses prevented the team from ever developing a rhythm on the pitch as several key players failed to hit their stride. The talent is present yet several questions need to be answered for this squad on the pitch. Kei Kamara and Juan Agudelo are the strikers up top. For Agudelo, age 24, now is the time for him to take the next step. The issue for Kamara is can he still be a consistent and reliable goal scorer at age 32 especially considering the drama surrounding him last year and his drop-off in production. Another question is who will drive the offense, Lee Nguyen or Kelyn Rowe? Nguyen struggled last year for the first time in recent history. Meanwhile, Rowe stepped in at point and the Revs had more success with him leading the attack. Rowe is gritty, fiery, and physical. Diego Fagundez needs to step up his game as well considering his ability. He is talented but disappears for long stretches of unproductive play. Xavier Kouassi was signed as a DP from Sion last year then blew his knee before ever stepping on the pitch for New England. His recovery has been a difficult one per his own words and he was still working his way back to form as of last month. The club really needs his return to fitness. Scott Caldwell is a very solid defensive MF. The CBs last year were disastrous so new signees Antonio Mlinar Delamea and Benjamin Angoua are the new faces at the positions. Andrew Farrell stays outside and Chris Tierney returns as a reliable LB. GK Bobby Shuttleworth was disappointing last year so he has been replaced with young Cody Cropper. Cropper needs to take this opportunity to solidify himself as a first choice keeper. New England believes that Femi Hollinger-Janzen is a F with some promise, if a bit raw in his play. Teal Bunbury, London Woodberry, and Je-Vaughn Watson offer serviceable depth.

New York City FC
Nickname: Pigeons, Blues

Kit Sponsor: Etihad
Ground: Yankee Stadium (49,642), grass

Owner: Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan (UAE), Hank Steinbrenner (USA), Hal Steinbrenner (USA)
Executive: President Jon Patricof (USA), Director Claudio Reyna (USA)
Manager: Patrick Vieira (FRA)

MLS Cups Won: 0
Supporters Shields Won: 0
US Open Cups Won: 0
2016 Record: 15-9-10, 2nd place Eastern, 4th place overall

Farewells: M Frank Lampard (retired), M Andoni Iraola (retired), M Mix Diskerud (unsigned), GK Josh Saunders (to ORL), M Federico Bravo (to Panetolikos), D Connor Brandt (unsigned), D Jason Hernandez (unsigned)
Greetings: GK Sean Johnson (from CHI), M Maxi Moralez (from Leon), M Alexander Ring (from FC Kaiserslautern), D Alexander Callens (from Numancia), M Rodney Wallace (from Sport Recife), M Miguel Camargo (from Chorillo), F Sean Okoli (from FC Cincinnati), M Yangel Herrera (from Manchester City), F Jonathan Lewis (from Akron)

Outlook: Patrick Vieira led NYC to a productive season on the pitch even though they fell flat in the playoffs, an end result that some said was partly caused by over tinkering on Vieira’s part. This club has great chemistry on and off the pitch and is pleasing to watch. Reigning MVP David Villa returns and his skills remain very sharp. He also plays with high energy and intensity while leading on and off the pitch. Jack Harrison is immensely talented on the wing and will look to be more consistent over an entire season. Tommy McNamara can play as a winger or central MF with equal capability. Khiry Shelton displayed flashes of brilliance in his second year. Andrea Pirlo returns as the maestro of midfield, driving the offense from the back with aplomb even if a bit less mobility can be detected. His positioning, awareness, and vision are all still superlative. Serie A and Liga MX veteran Maxi Moralez arrives to be the attacking MF in place of retired legend Frank Lampard. Newly signed Finnish international Alexander Ring could be the replacement for retired Andoni Iraola, who was an excellent #6 for NYC. Young Panamanian international Miguel Camargo is also an option in midfield. Ronald Matarrita blossomed at FB, drawing interest from Europe, while R.J. Allen provided steady performance on the opposite side of the backline. CB and GK were key weaknesses last season and steps were taken to address those concerns. Peruvian international Alexander Callens joins returning players Maxime Chanot and Frederic Brillant at CB with the hope of shoring up the position. GK Josh Saunders was jettisoned and Sean Johnson was acquired by trade as his replacement. He should be a significant upgrade between the posts. Sean Okoli was the USL MVP at FC Cincinnati last season and will provide depth up top along with top draft pick Jonathan Lewis and veteran Rodney Wallace. Mikey Lopez offers additional depth for the midfield while loanee Yangel Herrera will receive a look. Ethan White is a quality backup on the back end. NYC has the capability to be one of the best in the league.

New York Red Bulls
Nickname: Red Bulls
Colors: White, Red, Yellow, & Blue
Kit Sponsor: Red Bull
Ground: Red Bull Arena (25,000), grass

Owner: Dietrich Mateschitz (AUT), Chaleo Yoovidhya (THA)
Executive: Associate Director Michael Holody (USA), Assistant Director Denis Hamlet (CRC)
Manager: Jesse Marsch (USA)

MLS Cups Won: 0
Supporters Shields Won: 2 (2013, 2015)
US Open Cups Won: 0
2016 Record: 16-9-9, 1st place Eastern, 3rd place overall

Farewells: M Dax McCarty (to CHI), D Chris Duvall (to MON), D Ronald Zubar (to Red Star FC), F Omar Damari (to RB Leipzig), D Karl Ouimette (to San Francisco)
Greetings: D Michael Amir Murillo (from San Francisco FC), Hassan Ndam (from Rainbow FC)

Outlook: Jesse Marsch has earned a reputation as one of the best and brightest managers in MLS. His presence and influence has grown at NY to the point where he is clearly the man in charge of the club. He is not shy about making a bold move, as witnessed by the trade of Dax McCarty. He has his vision and the power to implement that vision as he sees fit, for better or for worse. NY’s bread and butter was the trio of McCarty, Kljestan, and Wright-Phillips: McCarty holding down the rear, starting the run of play with his vision and passing then following in support, Kljestan breaking down the defense with vision, passing, and off the ball movement, and finally Wright-Phillips finishing for goal. Sacha Kljestan and Bradley Wright-Phillips return as the most lethal 1-2 punch in MLS; Kljestan led the league in assists and chances created while Wright-Phillips led the league in goals. Kljestan also offers crucial leadership. Homegrown Sean Davis will be tasked with filling McCarty’s role. Davis has 35 appearances over the past two years and has played well while growing into the position. His game thus far has been one of caution and intelligence. Marsch believes he is ready for the job. We shall see. Experienced and productive veteran Felipe will partner with him in midfield. The Red Bulls would like for DP Gonzalo Veron to finally live up to the idea they had when he signed; something, anything, even if it is just stretching the defense allowing more space for Kljestan and Wright-Phillips to work. Mike Grella has been a unsung hero at winger. Austrian Daniel Royer arrived from Denmark in late August last year and will be counted on for further contributions. Once again, there are many questions for the backline going into this season. CB Aurelian Collin was procured through trade early last year to help patch the hemorrhaging defense and made an immediate impact. He is undoubtedly the anchor of the backline. Second teamer Aaron Long has been given the opportunity to claim the CB position alongside Collin and NY desperately needs him to do so. Hassan Ndam was signed from Cameroon for depth. Sal Zizzo has worked his way to an everyday player at RB. Michael Amir Murillo will receive looks at RB. Young and green Justin Bilyeu will be given the chance at LB. Experienced veteran D Damien Perrinelle continues his return from knee injury at age 33. Kemar Lawrence has quality experience at FB. Luis Robles is highly experienced and one of the better keepers in MLS. Depth is provided largely by homegrown players from NY’s very successful academy that have worked their way up through the reserve team. Still, a lack of experienced depth is a concern. NY will score goals. Their season may be determined by the results of the McCarty to Davis succession and the answers to the open questions of the back line.

Orlando City SC
Nickname: Lions
Colors: Purple, White, & Gold
Kit Sponsor: Orlando Health
Ground: Orlando City Stadium (25,500), grass

Owner: Flavio Augusto da Silva (BRA), Phil Rawlins (ENG), John Bonner (ENG)
Executive: President Phil Rawlins (ENG), GM Niki Budalic (CAN)
Manager: Jason Kreis (USA)

MLS Cups Won: 0
Supporters Shields Won: 0
US Open Cups Won: 0
2016 Record: 9-11-14, 8th place Eastern, 15th place overall

Farewells: M Kevin Molino (to MIN), MF Brek Shea (to VAN), D Mikey Ambrose (to MIN), M Harrison Heath (to ATL), D Luke Boden (to Tampa Bay)
Greetings: D Jonathan Spector (from Birmingham City), M Will Johnson (from TOR), D Donny Toia (from MON), F Giles Barnes (from VAN), GK Josh Saunders (from NYC), D Victor Giro (from Tampa Bay), D Scott Sutter (from BSC Young Boys)

Outlook: Jason Kreis enters his first full year at the helm. His long run of success at RSL was achieved by forging a strong, disciplined defense along the spine of the formation, from the the GK through the CBs and MF all the way to the Fs, and running an offense through a consistent #10. I would expect him to set about shaping his Orlando squads with the same formula. The offense revolves around two players: Kaka and Cyle Larin. Kaka is the world legend still capable of unlocking defenses and Larin is the young gun drawing overtures from Europe for his finishing skills. The trade for Giles Barnes offers the Lions another F who can also help in midfield. Bryan Rochez and Carlos Rivas have been two disappointments up top. Rochez spent last season on loan back to his original club Real Espana and Rivas has offered little to nothing on offense or defense. Rivas will be asked to step up next to Larin or on the wing as needed. Matias Perez Garcia needs to establish himself opposite Antonio Nocerino, who is a quality MF. Will Johnson is a valuable addition, a grinder that brings experience and stability from box to box. Servando Carrascooffers decent depth. The atrocious defense of last year has been upgraded with the additions of Jonathan Spector and Donny Toia on the backline. Spector could be the guy that offers Orlando the defensive leadership they need. Jose Aja returns and will partner with Spector at CB. RB will see competition as young Brazilian USL standout Victor Giro arrives for a chance to claim the spot. Toia and Giro have the ability to play on either the right or the left. Rafael Ramos, Kevin Alston, and Scott Sutter will also play roles on the backline. Tommy Redding is a talented but green CB. GK Joe Bendik was bombed all season long last year and performed well given the amount of fire that he sustained. NYC castoff Josh Saunders is a quality backup in goal. Positive additions have been made in Orlando. This team is a work in progress that needs refinement, polish, consistent focus, and for players to sharpen their specific defined roles in Kreis’ system followed by execution. How well Kreis is able to bring that out in his players will determine if Orlando finds success.

MLS Cups Won: 0

2016 Record: 11-14-9, 6th place Eastern, 13th place overall

Farewells: M Tranquillo Barnetta (to St. Gallen), M Walter Restrepo (to New York Cosmos)
Greetings: F Fafa Picault (from St. Pauli), M Haris Medunjanin (from Maccabi Tel Aviv), D Oguchi Onyewu (unsigned), D Giuliano Wijnaldum (from VfL Bochum), F Jay Simpson (from Leyton Orient), M Marcus Epps (from South Florida)

Outlook: Andre Blake is the best GK in MLS and routinely makes spectacular saves. Keegan Rosenberry returns from a very good rookie season and solidifies RB, playing every minute of last season at the spot. Talented but raw CB Joshua Yaro has been felled by injury for the second straight year, most recently undergoing shoulder surgery that will see him miss most of the first half of the season, perhaps more. Epic veteran Oguchi Onyewu will see regular time in Yaro’s place while also providing a leadership role. The question will be how much Onyewu’s fitness will hold up given his age and knees. Richie Marquez returns to hold down the other CB slot while Fabinho will compete with new signee Giuliano Wijnaldum for minutes at LB. Well traveled and world experienced newcomer Haris Medunjanin will be given charge as the #6 while Alejandro Bedoya brings his physicality and range to the #8 role. Ilsinho and Chris Pontius will be up front to drive the attack, which will be multifaceted and go through the wings as much as central midfield. Pontius has good crossing and long range strike capability while Ilsinho can cut inside and attack the box. Fafa Picault will push them for minutes. Fabian Herbers and Roland Alberg need to step up in central attacking midfield now that Tranquil Barnetta is gone to Switzerland. Both have ability but need to stake their claim with more creativity and consistency. Bedoya will push far forward in attack whenever he can as well. C.J. Sapong and Jake Simpson will both have their chances to produce goals as a lone striker and one of them needs to make the role his own. Sapong started well last year but faded. 19 year old homegrown Derrick Jones has shown promise in central midfield while Marcus Epps has impressed in his short look at winger. Warren Creavalle is an experienced MLS player that can help out in the middle. It remains to be seen if Maurice Edu can remain healthy enough to make a significant contribution on the pitch. Charlie Davies had a tumultuous season last year but returns for a look up top. Ray Gaddis is an experienced and capable D. Jim Curtin will be expected to achieve positive results with this squad. The Union have a nice combination of promising youth and seasoned experience. Depth is better and the talent seems to be there. A couple more players need to really distinguish themselves and execution simply needs to be better. CB is a position to be cautious about with Yaro’s absence and Onyewu’s fitness.

Farewells: M Will Johnson (to ORL), D Mark Bloom (to ATL)
Greetings: M Victor Vazquez (from Cruz Azul), D Chris Mavinga (from Troyes), D Brandon Aubrey (from Notre Dame)

Outlook: The Reds return just about all of the team that almost won the MLS Cup last year plus a couple key additions. When in rhythm, this squad can run on anyone in its 3-5-2. Toronto set an MLS record for goals scored in the playoffs before it hit the awakened beast that was Seattle. Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore are probably the best F combo in MLS. Giovinco is one of the league’s best players and Altidore is a physical striker that can dominate at times. Giovinco acts as a #10 and will roam as he sees fit. Michael Bradley will patrol the rear of the central midfield with Armando Cooper, Jonathan Osorio, and Victor Vazquez all seeing time in front of him. Cooper is a physical player that maintains possession and has defensive skills. He is closing in on 100 caps for Panama while still in his 20s. Osorio is a Canadian international and Vazquez brings experience from Belgium and Mexico. All are quality, experienced MFs but Osorio and Vazquez will probably compete to play alongside Cooper. Steven Beitashour and Justin Morrow return on the wings with Morrow coming on very strong last year. Drew Moor was excellent last season and anchors the middle of the three man backline. Eriq Zavaleta will be to his right while returnee Nick Hagglund will battle newly signed Chris Mavinga on the left. Hagglund has spent the last three years gradually improving with Toronto while Mavinga played the previous two years in Ligue 2. Clint Irwin is one of the better keepers in MLS. Toronto has good quality depth at its disposal. Tosaint Ricketts is a playmaker. Canadian international Ashtone Morgan has almost 100 games at FB. MF Benoit Cheyrou is 35 years old but still valuable off the bench and as a spot starter. F Tsubasa Endoh showed ability as a rookie last year. Marco Delgado, Jay Chapman, and Mo Babouli are capable MFs. The Reds are high on the promise of young homegrown MF Sergio Camargo and new draftee D Brandon Aubrey. Toronto has improved three straight years under manager Greg Vanney. Possibly the best player in the league, a few standouts, solid quality all over the pitch, good depth, and experience should once again make Toronto among the best in MLS.

Outlook: Colorado paced itself to a second place finish primarily due to three reasons: one of the best team defenses in MLS history, the surging play of Jermaine Jones in the first half of the season, and timely goals by Shkelzen Gashi. The Rapids will need another tour de force extraordinaire from the defense again because concerns remain about the offense. A key problem is the lack of a bona fide #10 to lead the attack. Jones filled that role wonderfully last year but broke down during the season then left for LA. Pablo Mastroeni has tried to use Kevin Doyle in the role but Doyle is first a true striker and second a winger. He has all of four assists in close to 50 matches and at age 33, with an extensive injury history, it is not ideal to task with him creating plays for the offense. Dillon Powers is a #8 that started his MLS career off well but suffered a drop in form and production last year. He needs to rebound. Nana was signed from the Tippeligaen as an extra resource in midfield. Dominique Badji is a young streaky striker with speed but is raw and inconsistent. He lacks finer points such as positioning and awareness. Big Alan Gordon was signed as another option up front. The wings hold more capability with veteran Gashi and young Marlon Hairston. Gashi will launch a beautiful long range missile from time to time. Hairston emerged as a real threat last season with his speed, movement, and spatial awareness causing problems for opposing defenses. He can also send in a nice cross. The defense was a sound, disciplined unit led by Sam Cronin in midfield and Marc Burch, Axel Sjoberg, Jared Watts, and Eric Miller on the backline. GK Tim Howard was excellent after relieving Zac MacMath mid season and MacMath was no slouch himself. This defensive unit needs to perform well as a whole once again for the Rapids to succeed. Michael Azira offers decent, experienced depth as a defensive MF or D. Mastroeni needs to find a consistent goal scorer or, alternatively, find a way to get more goals from more players through chances created by a real #10. Another concern is a lack of quality depth.

Outlook: FCD is legit. This club ran to a domestic double in a superb season that was cut short at the tail end by the loss of their best player and the buzzsaw that was Seattle. They should be as good, perhaps even better this year, such is the depth of their young talent and homegrown players. Maxi Urruti was often the lone striker up top and, while capable of moments of brilliance, was frustratingly inconsistent. Enter 22 year old Paraguayan Cristian Colman to motivate him and take some goals for himself as well. Mauro Diaz was having an MVP year orchestrating the FCD attack when his Achilles ruptured in late October. He will hopefully return at some point midway through the season but until he does MLS veteran #10 Javier Morales was signed as reinforcement. Morales has lost a step and some productivity but he can still contribute and his experience along with his presence is worth a lot. Also capable of driving the offense is Carlos Gruezo. At age 21, all he has done so far is become a regular at Stuttgart as a teenager, play in a World Cup, and become the first Ecuadorian to score a Bundesliga goal. He can play on the wing or in central midfield, is fast, and is eager to prove himself. He will have his chance to step up as a real playmaker in Diaz’ absence. Colombian winger Michael Barrios is very good and entering his third year at FCD. New signee Roland Lamah slots in on the left wing in Fabian Castillo’s old spot. He is a very capable and crafty veteran footballer who should seamlessly step into the lineup. Kellyn Acosta has been developed by Oscar Pareja for the last couple of years and is becoming a complete player. He will probably play as a #6 but can also be a true box to box MF. He is an excellent passer, is fast, and is physical. He has the speed to move high in the attack yet recover if need be and is a very good tackler. He may be arriving on a new level as a player with his growing confidence. MLS Defender of the Year Matt Hedges and young new USMNT international Walker Zimmerman are the best CB pairing in MLS. Hernan Grana and Maynor Figueroa are the outside backs and bring a tonne of European and South American experience with them. Chris Seitz is so good that he took the GK starting position from young Jesse Gonzalez, who is very talented. Together, they may be the best two keepers on one team. The depth on hand is significant. Carlos Cermeno arrives via loan from the Venezuelan first division to audition his talents in midfield. Young defender Anibal Chala was signed from Ecuador. Victor Ulloa has progressed well under Pareja and provides experienced depth as a central MF. Ryan Hollingshead stopped to help a stalled motorist last month and was hit by a car for his trouble, suffering a broken neck in the process. Amazingly, he should recover without surgery after a few months in a neck brace. He had become a very good MF and although he will be missed he will of course be carefully and slowly brought back to fitness. Tesho Akindele is a dangerous attacking player who would be an everyday starter for many clubs. Atiba Harris has tonnes of quality minutes as a FB and a winger. Jacori Hayes is 21 years old, a true #10, and was one of the best players in college last year at Wake Forest (the college soccer equivalent of Alabama). He could be nurtured by Pareja into the next star. Pareja is the best manager in MLS, a successful and immensely experienced developer of young talent. These guys are young, deep, strong on both ends of the pitch, and fun to watch.

Outlook: Houston was in disarray last year with problems all over the pitch from offensive sputtering, to a lack of midfield execution, to defensive breakdowns. The team was largely shuffled in the aftermath. Enter Wilmer Cabrera as manager, who just completed a successful year at Rio Grande Valley, Houston’s USL club. Honduran internationals Romell Quioto and Alberth Elis were brought in to work with Mauro Manotas up top and hopefully augment the attack. There is promise and talent with all three players. Midfield is unspectacular and the Dynamo lack a proper #10. Erick Torres was signed in 2015 and the Dynamo are still waiting for his first goal. Alex and Eric Alexander are both solid and experienced, yet Alex disappears for long periods and Alexander lacks creativity. 21 year old Jose Escalante, who spent last year leading the attack at Rio Grande under Cabrera, will get a look. Andrew Wenger and Boniek Garcia are veterans capable of causing some trouble on the wing. Ricardo Clark is 34 and still contributing. The Dynamo have faith in rookie Joe Holland to develop into the midfield equation. Juan David Cabeza was signed to be the #6. He has bounced around Colombian clubs for years with varying degrees of success. The back line has been retooled with experienced veterans and leadership. Panamanian international and Saprissa captain Adolfo Machado was signed to partner with MLS veteran Leonardo at CB. A.J. DeLaGarza was brought in from LA to fill RB and USMNT legend Damarcus Beasley returns at LB with all his age, quality, and experience. Tyler Deric remains the GK and has been solid. There is not a lot of good depth up front and in the back. This was a team lacking real playmakers; someone needs to emerge. The Dynamo need the young attackers to step into the roles and produce, the midfield to find a leader that can drive the offense, and the defense to tighten up. This team, along with their new manager, are an open book with lots of unanswered questions.

Greetings: M Jermaine Jones (from COL), M Romain Alessandrini (from Marseille), M Joao Pedro (from Vitoria)

Outlook: The Galaxy are undergoing a transformation. Curt Onalfo, who led LA Galaxy II the last three years, takes the helm after Bruce Arena’s successful eight year run. Major contributors are gone. Giovani Dos Santos is now the center of this club and he will be asked to continue leading the attack, racking up goals and assists. He will play F but will roam as he sees fit to make plays. Gyasi Zardes will join Dos Santos up top but is an open question as he continues to recover from surgeries for a broken foot and knee damage. Will his speed be affected? Will his touch still be there? Zardes may miss the beginning of the season for continued rehab. Until Zardes can show that he is fit, young players Jack McBean, Ariel Lassiter, Bradford Jamieson, and Jose Villarreal will have the chance to make their mark. Midfield is set on the outside with two dynamic players in Sebastian Lletget and Romain Alessandrini. Lletget has the skill and versatility to play on either side as well as in central midfield, which he has stated is his natural and preferred position. USMNT legend Jermaine Jones and Portuguese newcomer Joao Pedro will man central midfield. Baggio Husidic can play centrally or on the flank and offers good defense and passing skill. The back line is very good but a serious question persists regarding Robbie Rogers, who still has not recovered from two ankle and foot surgeries. He has yet to train. Otherwise, Jelle Van Damme, Daniel Steres, and Ashley Cole are three of the best Ds in MLS and all enjoyed stellar performances last year. Brian Rowe stepped up and took the GK spot from quality MLS veteran Dan Kennedy, becoming one of the better keepers in MLS in the process. Emmanuel Boateng will see plenty of minutes as a winger. His speed is an asset; his passing abilities and defense need further development. Dave Romney offers quality depth at FB. The Galaxy do not have the depth of previous years, especially in midfield and on the backline. Injuries could cause problems. Yet the greatest question is how this team will play and progress under Onalfo. The Galaxy should be good once again. The question is how good.

Minnesota United FC

Manager: Adrian Heath (ENG)

MLS Cups Won: 0

US Open Cups Won: 0
2016 Record: None

Farewells: Almost everybody
Greetings: Almost everybody

Outlook: The Loons have been quietly but steadily building a team of MLS players, select NASL holdovers, and international veterans. Kevin Molino is the #10 and manager Adrian Heath’s guy. Heath coached him during Orlando City’s USL days, expanded his role during the Lions’ first two MLS seasons, and has now brought him to lead the attack in Minnesota. Molino is talented with distribution, speed, and shooting skills. He will play outside on the wing but will have free range and will spend just as much time drifting inside. Johan Venegas showed flashes of ability in Montreal but never performed with consistency. He will be heavily involved in the attack and will play up top as a F on the right and in center, perhaps at times a false 9. Bashkim Kadrii comes from Copenhagen and will play in front as well, usually on the left and in center. Heath will try to use Molino, Venegas, and Kadrii to attack in and around the box with lots of combination play between them. This team may often play without a true striker. When they do have a striker on the pitch, it will most likely be one of either Christian Ramirez or Abu Danladi. Ramirez has been a prolific goal scorer with Minnesota through their last few years in the NASL and now he will have an opportunity to show his ability in MLS. Danladi was the top overall selection in this year’s Superdraft. Fresh from UCLA, he is undoubtedly talented but very raw. I expect Heath to bring him along carefully this season. Miguel Ibarra returns to Minnesota from Leon and will definitely be involved on the left wing. Josh Gatt arrives from Norway and will see time on the right wing provided that he is recovered from his bevy of knee injuries. Finnish international Rasmus Schuller and MLS veteran Mohammad Saeid are solid box to box MFs that will be counted on to shore up the defense along with former Houston player Collen Warner. Ibson has been with the Loons since their NASL days and will offer depth in midfield. Costa Rican international Francisco Calvo will pair with Norwegian international veteran Vadim Demidov as the CBs. There is open competition for the outside D spots. Justin Davis is a NASL Loon holdover and may be the favorite to claim LB while Kevin Venegas, Alvin Jones, and veteran MLS and Jamaican international Jermaine Taylor will all receive looks at RB. Steady Swiss League veteran Jerome Thiesson was signed from Luzern and can play on the left or the right along the back line. He should see a lot of minutes. Supertall Joseph Greenspan and NASL Loon veteran Brent Kallman offer some depth at CB. Veteran Swede John Alvbage arrives from Goteborg to play GK and will fight for the position with New England castoff Bobby Shuttleworth, who offers MLS experience. Heath is a congenial, nurturing manager who will offer positive reinforcement for his players. This team is a work in progress with a stated goal of growing together on the pitch, weathering the trials ahead, and competing for a playoff spot.

US Open Cups Won: 0
2016 Record: 12-14-8, 7th place Western, 12th place overall

Farewells: D Nat Borchers (retired), M Jack Jewsbury (retired), M Ned Grabavoy (retired), D Steven Taylor (to Ipswich Town), F Jack McInerney (unsigned), M Lucas Melano (to Belgrano)

Outlook: Portland fizzled last year in defense of their MLS Cup and in response additional reinforcements have been made for the attack, defense, and in depth. The front four of Fanendo Adi, Diego Valeri, Darlington Nagbe, and Sebastian Blanco should be among the very best in MLS. Adi is a physical wrecking ball at striker. Valeri is one of the best #10 CAMs in the league, striking and distributing with equal skill. Nagbe can outduel most defenders and should create havoc on the left wing, which he prefers to the right. The addition of Blanco on the right allows Nagbe to move left and gives the Timbers another fast, dynamic, and skilled winger. Diego Chara is a #8, good on both ends of the pitch. Experienced Costa Rican international David Guzman was signed as the first true #6 in a while for Portland and will help defend the rear. The Timbers had the worst defense in their conference last year and it was a prime reason for their lack of wins, along with terrible away form (lack of mental strength and focus) and inconsistency on the wings. Concerns still remain for the back line. CB Liam Ridgewell was solid but his partner is an open question. Nat Borchers retired and his heir apparent, young Nigerian international Gbenga Arokoyo, ruptured his Achilles in January. Roy Miller and Lawrence Olum will attempt to fill the role. Miller is a Costa Rican international that has spent the last seven years at New York Red Bulls and Saprissa while Olum has spent the last several years on and off with SKC, among others. One of them needs to put in solid play and claim the position. Outside backs Alfas Powell and Vytas will move forward in attack. Both are internationals for their respective countries, Jamaica and Lithuania, and both are pivotal to Portland’s chances for success. GK Jake Gleeson stepped in for injured Adam Kwarasey and played well. Portland has a lot of depth. D Rennico Clarke, D Marco Farfan, and F Victor Arboleda are all young, talented players that will play. Experienced Chance Myers arrives from SKC and will help out at FB. Zarek Valentin has ability on the back line. Ben Zemanski is an experienced defensive MF. Jack Barmby can assist the top of the midfield. Dairon Asprilla returns from Millonarios to reinforce the wing. Young Jeremy Ebobisse is a very talented rookie striker. Caleb Porter will deploy his 4-2-3-1 and ask his squad to press, control possession, and be multifaceted in attack through the wings as well as central midfield. Guzman and Chara need to shore up the midfield defense and the outside backs need to cover space. Portland should be very good this year.

Farewells: F Burrito Martinez (to Velez Sarsfield), M Javier Morales (to FCD), D Jamison Olave (unsigned), F Devon Sandoval (to San Francisco)

Outlook: For ten years Javier Morales pulled the strings at RSL, leading the club to much success and amassing 240 appearances. He is now gone and RSL begins somewhat of a new era on the pitch. Enter Albert Rusnak to drive the offense. The 22 year old Slovak has spent the last two years playing a lot of football in the Eredivisie and helping Groningen to the Europa League. He will lead the attack from central midfield. On his left will be Joao Plata, a dynamic winger that can score, create chances, and distribute. 21 year old Jordan Allen will have the opportunity to stake his claim on the right. Yuri Movsisyan is again up top as a pure #9. Brooks Lennon returns for a year from Liverpool, where he has shown a lot of ability. He will see time on the pitch although he will also be heavily involved with the USMNT U20. Chad Barrett is a veteran who offers quality depth. In midfield, returning veteran Luke Mulholland offers stability as a #8. RSL icon Kyle Beckerman still guards the rear although he is finally beginning to show some wear and tear as he approaches 35 years of age. Sunny will also see minutes as a defensive MF in Beckerman’s relief. Luis Silva has flashed glimpses of talent as an attacking MF but has disappeared the last two years at RSL then Tigres. He returns with the hope of showing some of the ability he displayed at DC United. Young Jamaican international Omar Holness will get his looks. Sebastian Saucedo is a creative attacker who is also a part of the USMNT U20 squad. Tony Beltran, still in his 20s, returns at RB for his 10th year at RSL with over 220 appearances. Superdraft pick Reagan Dunk will see minutes as Beltran’s understudy. On the other side of the backline, a pair of erstwhile veterans in Chris Wingert and Demar Phillips will battle for minutes. At CB, Justen Glad, Aaron Maund, Chris Schuler, and David Horst will all have roles. Glad saw a lot of time last year and is promising at the position. He will be drawn away often with the USMNT U20 team as they prepare for the World Cup. Maund has significant experience from the past few years. Schuler has been inconsistent and hampered by injuries. Horst arrives from a difficult season with Houston. While slightly unsettled, enough depth exists at CB position to provide a level of security. Nick Rimando returns as GK and will turn 38 years old this summer. Matt Van Oekel, from Edmonton, and young Lalo Fernandez of Real Monarchs will compete to be Rimando’s backup. Jeff Cassar enters his fourth year managing RSL with a record of ho hum results and there is a thought that this season could be make or break for him. Popular and successful former NY manager Mike Petke was recently hired to lead the club’s USL affiliate Real Monarchs. Draw conclusions as you see fit.

Greetings: M Jahmir Hyka (from FC Luzern), M Florian Jungwirth (from Darmstadt), F Danny Hoesen (from Groningen), F Marco Urena (from Brondby), M Jackson Yueill (from UCLA), D Harold Cummings (from Alajuelense)

Outlook: The wheels fell off for San Jose last season. A paltry offensive output was the prime reason for the failings and the team looked sluggish and disjointed on the pitch. The new GM expects a return to what Dominic Kinnear has usually done throughout his managerial career: win. To help in that regard, a number of new international signings were made and the underproductive, inconsistent, and oft injured were cast off. Chris Wondolowski had his worst season in recent years. At age 34, the hope is for him to rebound for a couple more productive years. Danny Hoesen and Marco Urena will compete for time next to Wondo in what will probably be a 4-4-2. Dutchman Hoesen is on loan from Groningen and has shown flashes of ability but has yet to find a consistent rhythm. He has an opportunity to take a step forward in San Jose. The same can be said of Urena, a Costa Rican who has struggled to find form in the Danish league. Simon Dawkins needs to step up on the wing. He was unable to create chances or unlock defenses, not good for a winger that relies more on possession than speed. On the other side, Jahmir Hyka arrives from several productive years in the Swiss league. He is fast, technically skilled, and will be tasked with something the Quakes sorely lacked last year: fulfilling the #10 role. As such, look for Hyka to drift inside as he tries to bring creativity to the attack. Central midfield is a bit fluid but will probably see Fatai Alashe and Anibal Godoy together. Alashe needs more consistency and Godoy needs to reduce his careless giveaways. Shea Salinas and Cordell Cato are quality experienced wingers that will see significant minutes. El Salvadorian national team captain Darwin Ceren is another option in midfield. Young Tommy Thompson needs to take another step in his development and make a greater impact with his looks. Jackson Yueill arrives from UCLA and looks ready to contribute. Florian Jungwirth and Victor Bernardez are the likely CBs. Bernardez is a brutish defender who is not shy about making a rough tackle. Jungwirth is a talented and experienced German CB who should be very sound. Nick Lima should be the RB while Shaun Francis will be the LB. Kofi Sarkodie is an experienced quality FB. GK David Bingham is one of the best in MLS. While depth seems solid, injuries have taken a toll on important contributing players. M Marc Pelosi and F Quincy Amarikwa still have not recovered from knee injuries. D Marvell Wynne is out with arrhythmia. D Harold Cummings underwent hernia surgery in January. The new players will need time to form chemistry with the returning veterans. The reality of this question means that the Quakes will be somewhat of a work in progress.

Greetings: F Will Bruin (from HOU), M Harry Shipp (from MON), M Gustav Svensson (from Guangzhou)

Outlook: Brian Schmetzer took over a team in underperforming disarray and guided them with a deft, calm focus to the MLS Cup. The Sounders were the best team in the second half and steamrolled through the playoffs, losing only twice after Schmetzer’s appointment. Aside from the manager, the person most responsible for that brilliant run of play was Nicolas Lodeiro. Arriving midseason, Lodeiro filled the black hole in the middle of the pitch and changed the way the Sounders played. A true #10 with excellent technical skill, pace, fitness, distribution, vision, and scoring ability, he is a complete player. He plays defense too, hassling and disrupting the flow of opposing offenses. He is also humble and a class act. Clint Dempsey has been cleared to play and should be available from day one. However, the Sounders say that he will continue to be handled with caution. Jordan Morris was the Rookie Of The Year, steadily raising his game as the season progressed. The left wing will see new arrival Harry Shipp and returnee Alvaro Fernandez. Shipp needs to improve with consistency to claim the spot outright. Cristian Roldan emerged as a stalwart #8, a solid contributor in the midfield behind Lodeiro. Ozzie Alonso is the destroyer holding down the fort in front of the backline. Chad Marshall and Roman Torres are a great CB pairing. Both are big, physical guys. Brad Evans returns to the right flank. Joeven Jones improved his defense during the course of last season and has always offered the ability to fly forward. He has good recovery speed. GK Stefan Frei is one of the better keepers in MLS and became storied with that MLS Cup save. Depth is thin. Will Bruin is a solid, physical striker while new signee Gustav Svensson brings reinforcement for midfield. D and Jamaican international Oniel Fisher has a couple years experience on his boots. There is no experienced backup for Frei. Age and fitness are a bit of a concern. Dempsey, Alonso, Evans, Marshall, Torres, Fernandez, and Frei are all in their 30s and have dealt with injuries in the past year. A proliferation of injuries, coupled with a lack of proper depth, could derail this club’s chances. Yet if fitness can be maintained the Sounders should be one of the best in MLS this year.

Outlook: Benny Feilhaber and Dom Dwyer carried SKC to the playoffs last year and Feilhaber nearly took down MLS Cup champion Seattle by himself. Dwyer is one of the best strikers in MLS, scoring 50 goals over the past three seasons. On the left, Gerso Fernandez was signed from Portugal and should stretch defenses, opening up space for the center and creating chances. On the right, a pair of youngsters in Latif Blessing and Soony Saad will see time. Blessing is a fast little guy that led the Ghana league in goals last year. Saad returns to SKC after a couple good years in Thailand. Saad can play anywhere up front and young Hungarian Daniel Salloi is a promising 20 year old from SKC’s academy. Chilean Diego Rubio is depth at F. Feilhaber is a bulldog, a fearless attacker with technical skill. Benny does not sit back, survey the pitch, and take what the defense gives him; he runs right at and through the defense. He does not shy from duels. He is the #10 and the engine of the offense as most of SKC’s attack will be right through central midfield. Soni Mustivar has been the #6 for the past couple years but new signee Ilie Sanchez will probably claim the role. He has drawn praise from his manager and teammates for his cool possession from the rear. Roger Espinoza is a steady, experienced #8. Jimmy Medranda will play a number of positions in midfield as well as FB. SKC needs him to step up as a lack of midfield depth is an issue. Matt Besler has been the mainstay of the defense but suffered a dip in form and was benched last season for the first time in years. SKC will look for him to rebound and once again lead the backs. Ike Opara has steadily improved and will be the other CB. Kevin Ellis is quality depth at the position. Erik Palmer-Brown had a good loan with Porto B and is excelling with the USMNT U20. He is currently leading the U20s to the World Cup and therefore could see less time with SKC. Seth Sinovic has slowly laid claim to the LB spot, coming on strong toward the end of last season. Graham Zusi, Saad Abdul-Salaam, and Igor Juliao are all options at RB. Zusi has been given the job although he could also see time up the right wing. His form has diminished the last two years and his lack of speed is a concern. Still, he can send in good crosses and corners, make a timely play, and offers experience and leadership. Abdul-Salaam played a lot of decent minutes at RB last season and Juliao returns from a productive loan stint in Brazil. Tim Melia is okay at GK. There is no experienced backup to him in goal. Peter Vermes is one of the most successful managers in MLS and knows his players well. SKC will play a high, pressing, possession based attack in a 4-3-3 type. They should be good once again.

Outlook: Regressed defenders, misfiring goal scorers, and the absence of an injured Kekuta Manneh produced a bitter 2016 in Vancouver. The attacking front is somewhat in flux at the beginning but the players are there for a promising offense. Manneh is back and should provide a jolt to the attack just with his presence. He is fast, skilled, and will play the role of a #10. Look for him to line up outside on the left but spend a lot of time drifting inside. Fredy Montero returns to MLS after adventures in Portugal and China. He will stretch the defense on the other side but will also attack the box to create his own chances. F Alphonso Davies is physically gifted, strong, balanced, fast, calm in tight space, and instinctive. He is also 16 years old. He will look to get in front of the goal to finish crosses and combos. Peruvian Yordy Reyna arrives from Europe and will see time up front all around the box. Veteran winger Christian Bolanos returns on the right. Brek Shea was acquired just prior to the first match of the season and could play a variety of roles. Look for him to be used primarily as a winger and forward as well as a LB in a pinch. Christian Techera and Erik Hurtado offer depth. Matias Laba is a strong defensive MF. Andrew Jacobson is an experienced and decent #8 but often fails to impact a match. He will be pushed by Canadian international Russell Teibert. Veteran Mauro Rosales was acquired to help shore up the midfield. CB Kendall Waston was a former Defender of the Year and CB Tim Parker was a promising young phenom a year ago. Then both stumbled through disastrous season performances. What was supposed to be a strength of the club turned out to be a chronic problem. Both should be better and need to be better. There are options at both RB and LB. Veteran Jordan Harvey returns at LB and is very capable. Marcel de Jong can play LB and the midfield; he is sort of a Canadian Brek Shea. MLS veteran Sheanon Williams and highly rated rookie Jake Nerwinski will fight for time at RB. David Ousted is one of the best GKs in the league. Carl Robinson is a talented young manager that weathered adversity for the first time last season. The Whitecaps have the potential to make a good run but some key pieces have to be settled and roles defined.

Last night's match was absolute shambles for Minnesota. But what can you really expect when you start Jermaine Taylor at right back. He was involved in almost every lapse last night from Minnesota, much like he was last year when he played for Portland. It's no wonder Portland were so bad in defense last year.

I'm actually excited to watch Columbus and Chicago this afternoon. Would not have imagined that being the case after last season, but I think both of these teams will be much improved, and are dark horses to make the playoffs. Columbus moreso, but don't sleep on Chicago.

4-Minute Highlights:

VAN v PHI

ORL v NYC
- Orlando's new stadium looks fantastic. Bendik is an underrated keeper. That flick by Villa toward the end was brilliant.

SJ v MON
- A very nice play by Godoy.

HOU v SEA
- Quioto looks very good for Houston. Torres gets his first goal. Frei with another great save. It is great to see Dempsey play and get a goal.

DC v SKC
- Some great saves in this match, including a world class one by Hamid.

RSL v TOR

COL v NE

LA v FCD
- Dallas looks so good. Acosta continues to emerge as a playmaker. Watch what he does at 2:55.

CMB v CHI
- Young Zack Steffen kept the Crew from a loss with a fantastic save toward the end.

POR v MIN
- Portland looks like one of the best. Adi is a straight up killer and all those attacking players (Valeri, Nagbe, Blanco) are dangerous and fun to watch.

ATL v NY
- The difference was Robles. This match could have easily been 3-0 Atlanta but for Robles making two amazing saves. He also has tremendous instincts and comes off his line better than just about anyone to snuff out attacks.

Outstanding Goals:

Quioto

Acosta

Very fair assessment. The offseason was...good? Odd, but good. I'm ok with Morales move, he really dragged the game, and the team down often. Martinez was a human highlight reel, but rarely turned that into goals after the first third of the season.

We needed to get younger on the attack, while continuing to grow and support the solid defensive core. Lennon, Rusnak, Velasquez, Silva, Saucedo....lots of promise there. I'm cautiously excited as I think making and missing the playoffs are about equal probability.

The Petke move was obviously a shot across the bow for Cassar, and as someone who isn't a fan of Cassar, would have no problem with Petke taking over should things turn south.

Alphonso Davies is an exciting, talented player. It is amazing that he is only 16 years old yet playing with a kind of calm confidence.
