Starting in 2018/19. Also some changes to the rankings in that historical results will carry weight in addition to recent years.

So the big clubs cried some and sorta got their way. Water is wet.

Well you wouldn't want the current best 32 teams in there would you?

Which this doesn't do without even more radical changes. Champions of Bulgaria wouldn't be a part of best 32.

Need to see exactly how the coefficients will be calculated in order to determine just how skewed this is toward the top four leagues. Also need the full access list to see how it affects allocations to lesser leagues.

Portugal is getting screwed. It's outperformed Italy outside of Juve over the last few seasons.

From a Deadspin commenter:

quote:

Porto qualified for the CL group stage by hammering Roma.

Since 2012-13, the first season in which Italy’s Champions League allocation was reduced from 4 to 3, Italy has sent a 3 team contingent to the group stage once in five years. Portugal has sent a 3 team contingent in three of those five seasons, twice eliminating Italian opposition in the playoff round.

Under the new Champions League rules, Italy will be given 4 automatic group stage slots while Portugal will be reduced to two slots total, only one guaranteed for the group stage.

Brave, is that last part true?

Except that the parity between the England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, and Portugal and the rest of Europe is Massive. For the most part, teams from those countries only lose to teams from those countries.

Portugal getting cut to 2 teams total though? frick that's retarded.

That's fine but UEFA needs to make up their minds what the competition is. They have bent over backwards for more lower-level inclusion in recent years and are backtracking toward the big clubs.

Nitpick, but Netherlands no longer belongs on that list. PSV and Ajax are a shell of their former selves. And outside PSG, you could begin making that argument for France.

Wait, so it used to be 15 spots and now it's 16 spots that are guaranteed for the top 4 leagues, right?

It used to be 11 guaranteed plus four playoff ones, if my math is correct. So, yes, 15.

Now it's 16 guaranteed.
