Wow didn't realize brazil and Spain could meet in the knockout round very easily. If Netherlands wins group! That would be intense I picked USA to beat brazil in final 2-1! Beating Belgium in knock out round, Argentina in quarters and Croatia in semis ! Not impossible and I think most people would be happy if we pulled those math ups

Getting Croatia in the semis would probably be as good as we could hope for. Beating both Belgium and Argentina to get there would be epic.

I had Croatia beating Netherlands in knock out round , then Colombia in quarters. Colombia beating Italy in knock out round. If Netherlands wins there group the other side of the bracket will germany, brazil, spain, France, England, Bosnia, Russia and Greece. Our side would be Argentina, swiss, belgium, Croatia, Netherlands, Colombia and Italy. Definitely could happen

So you have Italy and England moving on with Uruguay bowing out in the group stage?

Mine is very straightforward, not a whole lot of upsets past the quarters.

About to submit my picks.

Am I the only that had a hard time with Group G? Can't help but feel if I were born in literally any other country I wouldn't pick the US to advance.

Eta: I don't mind soccer, I kind of know how FIFA works and I thought I had a basic perception of how good national teams were, then I took a peak at the FIFA rankings and I have no idea what to do now. Since when was the US ranked ahead of the Dutch? And even if we don't emphasize the sport as much as others do how the hell are we not ranked as high as Chile or Switzerland?

I just treated as something to give the World Cup more meaning if the US got knocked out

FIFA rankings are largely criticized for their inaccuracy. They reward teams form winning competitive matches, and don't take stock in exhibition results. This is why Brazil who didn't have to play in qualifiers for its own World Cup. is ranked lower than Portugal who played more qualifiers than most teams. Greece is ranked ahead of England because it had to qualify through the playoffs whereas England qualified directly by winning its group.

However, they do have merit if you look at them as more of a rough estimate of a teams value. Think of them as tiers.

Teams in the 1-7ish range would be considered elite. Teams from 8-25ish should be considered for a quarterfinal place or possible darkhorses, with their group and knockout draws taken into account.

So what a-hole is going to have Germany and Portugal in an attempt to gain a leg up on the rest of us?

Two thoughts I had when completing this -

I created through just my picks, a mini South American side of the bracket.

Brazil vs. Chile in the knock-outs and the winner would meet the winner of Uruguay vs. Columbia. This could really limit the South American's potential in this world cup. Argentina was all the way on the other side, and for some reason, I had them keep winning to the final.

Second thought - we are undoubtably the group of death. I see so many other groups I'd rather be in - and there is only one group, if you replaced the group from our pod with us, which would be a more difficult group for us. And thats Group D.

But since their rep from our pod is Costa Rica, its not as tough as our group.

We are also the ONLY group where all four participants made it to the knock-out round of the last World Cup.
